Haven Research Institute
A massive white building towers over a grassy yard. A transparent set of sliding doors allows entrance into the structure. Inside, there is a counter with a receptionist, who stares at a computer screen.
*Enters, slightly in awe* Wow... So this is the place... *A voice can faintly be heard from his phone* ???: So, are you ready? Rom: Yup. *He soon walks up to the receptionist*
The receptionist looks up and adjusts her glasses. "So you're... that person Miss Coda messaged me about, right? She said to direct you to room 1026- third room on your right." She points at one of the hallways.
Ah yes, thank you, Ma'am... *Rom heads to the room and knocks on the door*
This place looks peculiar... *A brown haired man in a doctor's coat walls in walking up to the receptionist as well
Nobody answers, but the sound of whirring machinery comes from inside. The door is unlocked. The receptionist notices the other visitor and smiles. "Are you here for that test, too? Miss Coda said the more people around, the merrier. Just follow that young man over there."
Hmm... *Rom drops his lance for a second, increasing the effectiveness of his senses, and he puts his ear to the door. After about 10 seconds, he picks up his lance again and slowly opens the door*
Hmm... interesting. *A man in a lab coat walks into the building." I heard there's a "test" here. Perhaps I could participate in getting the results?
Test...? Hmm.. *Brave then follows Rom, keeping his wits about him, watching for danger
"Yes, go right ahead! Follow the other two into that room over there." --- Rom opens the door to reveal a dark room lit by multiple monitors. Multiple chairs line the left and right walls, some with more wires than others. The monitors' speakers crackle to life. "Welcome, welcome!" The voice sounds a bit off, as if a computer is generating it, but it sounds almost exactly like a regular female voice.
*looks around, setting up a scan of the area with his phone* Hello there... I assume you're Coda?
*Brave assumes a serious stance and speaks quickly and without emotion Hello there, my name is Brave, I'm from the ministry of health, I'm here to inquire about what it is your doing here, hopefully not spreading the bugster virus?
"In the flesh! ...Figuratively speaking." The voice from the speakers laughs. "Welcome to one of our testing rooms! We have chairs and helmets set up, designed to immerse you into our virtual world. Don't worry, it's perfectly safe, since Scordatura monitors it whenever it's running!"
"...Bugster virus? Never heard of it. I'll have to look into that sometime..."
I see... This shall be interesting, to say the least. *Starts to inspect the chair and helmets, looking for any nooks and crannies for no apparent reason, while holding another USB key*
Hmm... Well then I suppose you aren't up to anything dangerous, I shall take part in this game to make sure that nothing goes wrong, what do we do?
*Machin Raal arrives.* Now this place seems interesting.
"All you have to do is sit down and put on one of the helmets! I suggest using units 1-A through 1-E. Those are the simplest models. However, we could monitor you much more in-depth if you use the '2' units." There are some sections to insert wires or chips into the helmets, probably to alter what is being transmitted if needed.
Very well. *Brave then takes a helmet and puts it on, taking a seat, hopefully he won't end up like his girlfriend
Alright then... Let's do it. *Rom inserts his USB key quickly into one of the ports and takes it out after a second. He then sits on a chair and puts on Helmet Unit 1-B*
*Machin Raal observes frim outside the room* Virtual world, hmm? I wonder...
The helmets hum to life, and the two's vision becomes dark. After a moment, a small light appears, which expands to fill the area with whiteness. "Aaaand we're online!" Coda's voice comes from... somewhere. "Alright, to start off, let's test out the Monster Crystals. We figured everyone deserves a companion to protect and love them in this world, so choose one!" A yellow crystal, a blue crystal, a gray crystal, a slightly darker gray crystal, and a red crystal appear.
From the real world, Raal sees this scene on one of the monitors.
*Rom looks at his surroundings and at the crystals* This is pretty intriguing... Companion? I wonder... *Rom reaches for the blue crystal*
Well then, this is allot different from the games I typically play. I wonder if I'll be able to use my driver. *Brave then reaches out for a gray crystal.
Both crystals glow, each expanding into a different creature. A small gray and white puppy flops down at Rom's feet, while a gray blob jiggles as it slides up to Brave. "A Wolf Pup and a Slime! How cute! Let's generate the world now..." The whiteness goes away, replaced with a grassy field. A small town can be seen in the distance.
A Wolf Puppy? Awww, it's so cute! *Pats it for a second before putting it back down and smiling at it. He then looks at the small town ahead and points* So, I guess this is where the game starts... *Because of the USB key he inserted, a debug hud and menu appears in front of him that he can only see, showing things such as coordinates, spawn points and other technobabble used to make me seem smart*
What should I name you, little guy? *Faces his Wolf Pup, pondering* ...How about... Perl? Wait, is it even a she?
Interesting, in this world we have a pet of sorts, well then slime let us go to the village, *Brave then moves towards the village, motioning for the slime and Rom to follow, putting his hands in his pockets
*Follows Brave, the Pup walking behind him*
*Raal smirks as he observes the screens.* Well well. This could be useful to me. I think I'll borrow this data. *Raal plugs his own USB into a port*
Coda chatters on. "Yep, it's a she! Anyway, here we go!" Inside the town, numerous NPCs wander the streets. Some have monsters, and some do not. A girl wanders up to them, a small white dragon fluttering lazily beside her. "Oh, these are the people the researchers were talking about! Now I don't have to just deal with NPCs all day..."
The helmet Raal's USB was plugged into hums as it begins uploading something. It stops for a moment, then continues until something is fully put in.
*Looks at the girl, slightly surprised while holding Perl* H-Hello... So, you're the only other sentient villager here? *The debug menu confirms she is unlike other NPCs in the town*
*The download complete, Raal removes the USB. He pulls out some sort of tablet and plugs the USB into it.* Let's see what I've got.
Hello there, I'm guessing your going to be our guide? My name is Brave, pleasure to make your acquaintance, now I have to ask, what is this place?
The girl nods. "I'm actually a player like you. I'm Amy, and this here is Yin!" The white dragon yawns sleepily and lands on her head. "This area is called... Beginner Village, at the moment. It's a placeholder name, but has basic stuff like quests and whatnot." Rom's debug menu would reveal that Yin is called a Dawnlight Dragon- a Light element that cannot "ascend" into another form, unlike Perl and Brave's Slime.
The data in the USB is some functions to generate a few monsters and part of the world. However, this is cut short by a video file, labeled "Nice try":
(Damn, gotta go, I'll be back later if this is still running)
*Raal chuckles* Not bad. Good thing I always have a back up plan. Since I know you're listening, shouldn't you greet me.
ooc: Alright, glad you could at least make the start!
*Rom smiles* I see. My name is Rom... It's nice to meet you, Amy. *Looks at Yin and back at Amy* That's quite a dragon you got there. A... Dawnlight, was it? Anyway, how developed is the world so far? Cliche name aside, the village seems really impressive! *Rom sets up a basic HUD in his debug menu with things such as HP, MP, Objectives, etc.*
A voice echoes in the room from the speakers, only able to be heard by Raal. "Hello, Coda here! I couldn't help but notice you were taking data without anything in return, so I decided to stop you. Company protocol and all... although the Protogent thing was a little extra joke."
"It's pretty advanced! It feels completely real... There's a few areas with monsters, too, although some are a bit buggy." Amy shrugs. "Not that I can go to those areas. They're a bit too tough for me alone, since Yin's not the strongest monster out there." The HUD shows his health in a percentage, but has raw numbers for health and stats for Perl. It also shows her only attack: Bite, a Neutral-type skill. An objective pops up: "Explore the area! ...And an interface like this is helpful. Might create one for everyone to use. -Coda."
Machin Raal. Pleasure is yours.
Wow... This is some pretty heavy stuff! ...And buggy, you say? That's no problem for me... Kinda one of the reasons I came here! *Looks around at the HUD, mainly at the objective section* Explore the area, eh? Let's get to that, shall we?
"Nice to meet you, Mr. Raal! Now, unless you want to give me something in return, I can't exactly let you stuff things into my machines. It's kinda rude to take stuff without sharing." --- A map appears on the HUD, courtesy of Coda. It shows the location of a library, a few shops, and some of the areas nearby. Apparently, creatures such as Spikeballs and Fox Kits spawn in the forest, while Harpy Chicks and Slimes love open fields.
You want something, do you? I have no problems with that.
"Yep! Can be anything. You seem to be rather good with computers, so any new programs could be useful..."
*Looks at the map in detail, debug included. Rom seems like he might geek out soon* This is amazing... I might check out the library first, but what do you want to do, Amy? *Rom sets checkpoints for each needed location on the map, which shows some arrows leading in those directions a couple of feet away from Rom in the overworld*
A special program, hmm? *Raal chuckles* I think I have just the thing.
"Hmm... Well, I don't really have much to do besides test basic things around here, so I might as well tag along!" Amy says. Yin purrs in agreement.
"Oooh, really? Plug it into one of the computer terminals, then!" If Coda had a physical form, she would be bouncing in excitement.
*Raal pulls out a red USB and plugs it in to a terminal, uploading a program* There you go.
*Rom's A.I. appears as a silhouette inside of a circle in the top right corner of the HUD. The arrow leading to the library flashes. He then follows it* [A.I.]: The library is that way, Chief! [Rom]: Thanks, Cal... Let's go, Amy!
"Thank you~" Coda examines the program, entering a different one into the USB at the same time. "This ol' thing should give you info on how the World of Chimera is generaged, as well as some stuff from the Creature Database." --- "Right!" Amy runs after him, with Yin riding on her head. The library's massive wooden doors swing open, revealing a vast selection of books. A set of spiraling stairs connect the multiple floor. A librarian sits at the desk with a tall, winged person beside him: a Light-element Archangel, the debug menu says.
*looks around the library, and at the Archangel* An Archangel, eh? Haven't seen those in forever! *Walks up to the librarian*
My thanks. *Raal removes and pockets the USB* Mine should provide some extra protection to your firewalls and other system defences. And there's a command module and a blueprint of a Archangel class research vessel for free. *He smirks sinisterly.* Pleasure doing business with you.
"And you as well. Hey, Scordatura! Look this over while I watch the players!" Some crackling is heard from the speakers, and a deep, robotic voice replies. "[Very well. I shall implement these programs at once]" --- The Archangel nods in greeting, and the librarian waves at the two. "Welcome! I've met Amy before, but you must be new. What can I do for you?"
*Raal points a gun at Rom.* I could kill you right now. But where's the fun in that. *He puts the gun away before leaveing* Do tell Rom how close he was to death. It'll be interesting to see how her reacts.
Ah, hello there... My name is Rom. I'm just looking around for a bit... *His eyes wander from book to book, hoping to get a description of some of them*
Coda's laugh comes from the speakers. "Of course! He's dead to the world at the moment, so I'll inform him once he's done with his adventure. Take care!" There's some soft muttering after that, but it's too quiet to hear.
Through a quick scan of the titles, he can see the various subjects: ascension of monsters, the different species, areas in the world, elements... The list goes on.
Hmmm... The attention to detail is spot on. *Rom grabs two books: one about world areas, and one about Elements. He goes back to the librarian with the two books*
The librarian checks out the books, with a small spark accompanying this. Amy nods to herself. "Should probably mention that visual glitch..."
*mumbles* A glitch? *Rom opens a journal tab and writes it down for future reference, putting the books in his inventory*
*Rom's A.I. appears momentarily again* [Cal]: How about we go to the shops next, Chief? You can find some useful items there! [Rom]: Sounds like a plan! *Rom follows the next flashing arrow, leading to the shops*
The books vanish into hammerspace. It's a game, so that kind of thing is normal.
Rom enters one of the shops, which has both weapons and scrolls on display. Said weapons are small, and some are fit for talons. They're probably weapons for monsters.
Let's see here... *Rom scans some weapons on display, showing which one would be best fit for Perl*
ooc: Food time, so shall return soon ic: There are some metal attachments that could fit around her fangs. This'll increase her attack power.
OOC: Sounds good!
ooc: The mere human commanding this account returns
OOC: Alright, shall we continue?
ooc: Of course! ic: Anyway, this'll increase Perl's attack power. There's also a scroll that teaches the Ice element attack, Frostbite.
Hmmm... *Keeps perusing the weapons and chooses the fang attachments.* I've already got ice cover- wait... I can summon my persona here, right?
A message appears on the HUD. "Uh... no. The system has no coding to summon Personas at the moment. It can only bring in your physical form. Try it if you want, but I doubt it would work at all."
I see... I'll have to try something later, so for now, I'll pick the ice attachment... *Does exactly that*
A few coins appear, courtesy of Coda, and Rom buys the scroll and weapon. Perl yips excitedly.
Alright! *Perl equips the fang attachments and activates the ice scroll* Now then... This will certainly be interesting.
Perl growls "fiercely" as she shows off her new metal fang coverings. A bit of frost forms around them. Maybe they should venture out of the town?
So, that seems to be all we can do in this village for now, so let's venture out! Wait, let me just.. *Rom taps his back, where his lance still is* Oh, thank goodness it's still there! Let's go! *Exits the shops and ventures fourth*
(forth*)
Amy waves as they leave... then sighs at another spark from the store clerk. "Gonna have to report that, too..." Man and monster approach a crossroads just out of town. One path leads to open plains, while the other is covered by trees.
*Rom marks the second visual glitch in the journal tab and ponders* Hmmm... Which one should we pick? *Rom scans the details of the tree-ridden forest just in case*
According to the debug menu, the Neutral-element Spikeball and the Fire-element Fox Kit spawn here.
I see... Maybe we should go to the forest. I'm kind of starting to get bored. How about you, Amy?
Amy shrugs. "Let's go there. Coda was planning to end testing in a few minutes, anyway."
*mumbles* I may not be able to summon my persona, but it doesn't exactly stop Mana flow either. *Turns back to Amy* Sounds good. Let's go! *Runs to the forest*
The forest is filled with the sound of chittering insects. A flash of red fur cuts through the bushes, and a spiked ball rolls lazily onto the path.
*Looks around the forest* This place looks beautiful... *Spots the spiked ball, and takes out his lance instinctively. He turns it around, making the back end face the front, and thrusts it forward towards the ball with enough force to make it stop in its tracks* Whew... Even in digitality that move makes me tired...
The Spikeball rolls back into the bushes, and uncurls and waddles out with an angry huff. A Fox Kit hops out as well to join its friend, growling.
Oooookay, looks like I angered them... Is this the part where the fighting comes in?
"Seems like it. Okay, Yin, let's go!" Amy shouts. The dragon yawns and rolls off her head, flopping to the ground. "...you tried." The Fox Kit snaps at Perl, who steps back with a snarl. She seems to be awaiting a command.
Heh... I got an idea, but for now... *Points his lance at the enemies* Let's go Perl! Frostbite!
A tiny wolf howl comes from Perl, and her fangs become coated with ice. She bites the Fox Kit, who is weak to the attack. It yelps and cowers behind the Spikeball. The Spikeball glares and curls up, rocking back and forth...
*Rom hits the Spikeball away as if it were a golf ball, sending it 2 feet away* Another frostbite, Perl!
The Spikeball is sent flying, giving Perl an opening to snap at the Fox Kit again. It yelps and runs off, but the extra distance gives the Spikeball a chance to roll towards Perl...
Oh jeez! Watch out, Perl! *Rom stumbles in front of Perl, barely managing to block the Spikeball with his lance. Rom is getting more tired from trying to push it back*
Perl tilts her head for a moment, then finally notices the Spikeball. She growls and knocks it away from Rom, getting hurt by the spikes. Thankfully, Yin actually does something useful, and sends a blast of light out to finish it off. "Excellent!" Coda's voice rings from the speakers as the world fades. Rom can feel himself sitting in the chair.
*After noticing the end of the simulation, he takes off the helmet, gets off the chair, and stretches. He looks at his phone and grins* Whew! That was really interesting. I'll be back here with that bug report. Anyway, where's Amy?
"She's elsewhere in the building. There's multiple testing rooms, after all. Anyway, as a little gift, I sent Perl's info to your laptop. Scordatura adjusted the code so that it's possible to summon her using the demon summoning program. She's still a very weak monster, and said adjustments aren't perfect, but she'll be a very good companion~"
Really? Awesome! Thank you, Coda... This will prove very useful to me! See you soon! *Rom seems very happy as he runs out of the building*
"No problem! Bye!" "[Master, you forgot to tell him about...]" "Oh, Mr. Raal? ...Meh. He'll figure it out eventually. Now, about expanding that code alteration to include all monsters..." The speakers cut out as Coda and Scordatura continue their conversation elsewhere.
