Yeah, they seemed to take that whole "idiot" thing to the max and it makes him really aggravating to listen to. I literally have no idea how anybody could possibly like that guy as an actual character. He's nothing more than a joke, and a bad one at that.

You're oversimplifying him if that is what you think.
The game's writing goes beyond mere caricatures. Ryuji has his role, but is still a character nonetheless.
Layers, motivation, backstory, progression. Just like the rest.
He is the most blunt and simplistic, sure, but some people are like that.
And I feel he adds to the group dynamic. I feel the Thieves never would've become what tget did without his passion. And ironically, that same passion led them down the wrong path later on.
