A step in the right direction
I'm a mainline SMT fan, I like it more than Persona in a lot of ways. That said, I think P5 is a great step toward bridging the gap that's been between SMT and Persona fans ever since P4. P5 has a more mature plot, and a pretty YHVH-like antagonist. I think this is a great thing, since instead of always arguing we can maybe all agree to like the two series for what they are; right?
Personally; I want Persona to be less SMT and more Persona.

I like both but I feel like if Persona becomes to much like SMT I won't actually enjoy it.

And yes; I'm aware that Persona started out as a spin-off of the SMT series, its just...its become so much more since the 3rd one, and if it goes back to being like SMT why not just make another SMT instead of Persona.. know what I mean?
You make a good point, I just want to see less elitism on both sides.
I kinda like it doing it's own thing, but it being more like mainline feels like it's filling a bit of a hole for me because I love SMT spinoffs, but I have never been a fan of mainline.
Put Digital Devil Saga, Raidou, Devil Survivor, Persona, etc in front of me and I'll play them for weeks. Put SMT I-IV in front of me and I'll fall asleep
I don't know know. Persona 1 was very SMT, and that's my least favorite game in the Persona series
I'm fine with Persona doing it's own thing, hell I encourage it. But, I think with P5's overall tone, newcomers may be more inclined to try those spinoffs you mentioned, or maybe even mainline SMT. That means more Atlus fans, which means more money for Fatlus, which means more games for everyone.
