If I remember correctly the ability to be a female character, and the social link changes that come with it, were exclusive to re-releases of 3 and 4, thus it is likely that P5 will have the option when it is inevitably remade, and meanwhile fits the pattern of lacking one.

Only happened in P3 Portable, actually. The main changes were Social Links, such as having Junpei for Magician instead of that dude who was in love with his teacher. Something like P5 Portable would probably have a similar thing.

Hey remember that time Persona let you choose between a Male or Female protagonist but the only good thing about the Female was the change of aesthetics but it ruined multiple Social Links and an important plot point.

It would be a cool and unique addition, but literally the entire story would have to be rewritten. A lot of work. Not just a simple add on.

Does gender really matter? For a work of media written for consumers, it would be like requesting for J.K Rowling to write a second variant of each Harry Potter book, but with Harry being a girl. The story was written with a male character in mind. Sure a female would work in the situation but the writer made the decision and it's silly not to respect it. The end result would barely change and it'd be little more than a palette swap. Or just fuck around with everything like P3P, some good, some bad. Shinji is dead for a reason folks. So am I against it? No. Is it necessary to make the game enjoyable? No.

While the concept would be interesting, I feel that if Atlus did do this, it would be hard for them to handle properly due to storyline changes. It would probably end up as a trainwreck, although it could potentially work.

Jace makes an excellent point. Caring about gender is what generally skewers characterization. Gotta aim this at guys, so female characters get warped, and vice versa. If the story is good and the characters are just characters, virtually no one will actually care who they play as. How many girls here dislike P5 because they play as a guy and can only romance girls? I'm betting not many. And how many guys are okay playing as a girl in a game you really like? I know I am, and I doubt I'm alone. Not every MC has to be a blank state just like you to identify with.

To elaborate on my other post too: Men and women will always view things just a bit differently, so gender swapping Akira would cause a lot of rewrites and changes, sure, but they'd be minor and basically pointless changes, as Jace said. Not even worth the effort.

" Yet two of the biggest complaints for this game are "I WANNA BE A GIRL!" and "I WANNA BE GAY". Even to the point that some people flat out trash the game over the second one.
