Apparently, the japanese do medieval european myth and fantasy better than america
why do i bring this up? the entire elder scrolls series, and any subsequent user of the formula.
Dragons Dogma (2012) carries much more substance of character, power scale, and variety of items than its one year prior critical hit, skyrim.
for instance, almost every weapon class has a different swing animation, the exceptions being staves and archstaves, and swords/maces. the equipment is also much more varied and some have enchantments, contrary to skyrims less than optimal variations of armor and weapons, DD reuses models and certain parts of other armors, but at least they bear a distinct look rather than just one base model, and a few unique things.
in terms of weapons, skyrims selection is okay, with swords, daggers, maces, axes, bows, and staves. whilst DD usus certain combinations for each class, as some can have a secondary item that could be essential to the playstyle. fighters carry not only a sword, but a shield, and can perform more than just a bash with the shield in combat, from gaining enemy attention by banging on it to holding it up and stabbing with your sword behind the shield. then theres striders, the games rogues. they use a pair of daggers and a bow, simple right? well they have very useful skills to learn, like thousand kisses (a barrage of slices) and fivefold arrows (a skill thats rather self-explanatory, you shoot five arrows)
this class shares similarities with the ranger, which is different in the fact that it prioritizes bows, but not any old bow, longbows, what was a flimsy climber that could dish out some pain becomes a fucking turret that can literally kill daimon, one of the hardest bosses, both forms, in five minutes. they carry a skill named tenfold arrow, and theres some nasty things you can do with that.
then theres the warrior, wielder of longswords, greatswords, and warhammers. they swing slow and can take a ton of punishment, they specialize in staggering enemies, so much so that a warrior thats well kitted can knock down a 50 foot tall gorecyclops in a few swings.
then we have some hybrid vocations, the assassin can use swords, shields, bows, and daggers. an ungodly versatile class with power upon power. but enough of sucking off dd, how does skyrim handle its combat?
you circle an enemy with your most powerful weapon and swing at it until it dies. congrats, youre a master of skyrim.
