The "phantom thief" on Naoto Shirogane's social link
Spoilers for those who haven't played Persona 4. Now, this may have been talked about before. If it has, my sincerest apologies. But going back into Persona 4, I had a bit of a recollection at 4 in the morning for some reason. There was the term "phantom thief" in Naoto Shirogane's social link in Persona 4. It was apparently an act put on by her grandfather. Considering in Persona 5, Shirogane was directly referenced, with Tohru Adachi being indirectly referenced on the TV with what appears to be an interrogation or trial. This had to mean Persona 5 was taking place around a similar time. Now, if I remember correctly, throughout the party's adventures, the Phantom Thieves became well-known throughout Japan and even had some traction internationally. It's very likely our cast in Persona 4 had heard of them. So possibly her grandfather did as well and maybe just decided to use that? Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to make any full theories or anything. It's very likely Atlus didn't think that far ahead and just thought "phantom thief" was a cool name. I don't know, I know the past games can't really acknowledge future games. I just thought it was quite interesting to point out.
I also noticed that.
I doubt there's any connection, but it's an interesting theory either way.
The events of P5 happen quite a while after P4, a few years. The idea of a 'Phantom Thief' is also a very common trope in Japan. It's likely some people on Persona were fans of the concept, but that's it.
the term phantom thief is common, as its used to described a burglar who is very hard to catch. persona didnt invent the term, just used it. also, if they were at the same time, why would akechi be the next detective prince if naoto was already the crowned prince and at the height of popularity. also why would they be using flip phones in 2016?
My main problem with this was the fact Adachi was shown to be getting questioned on the TV. Why would he be getting questions years after the fact? I'm pretty sure it was commonly known he did the murders at that point. And wouldn't he already be in prison at that point? Along with this, it's really bothersome to use a small detail for one game, then use it as a primary part immediately after. I see no problem at it being the "second coming" of the detective price either. Naoto was already known as that before she joined the party. For all we know, 5 could've taken place a bit after 4 rather than years later. As for flip phones, well, it's a more "rural" area, for lack of a better word. Maybe they couldn't afford it. Or the graphical limitations didn't allow for better phones. Also, the anime does have smart phones, just saying.

It's likely some people on Persona were fans of the concept, but that's it. It's also kind of a detective trope. Which Naoto's entire life was styled around. The idea of the Great Detective. For the record, P5 was originally set in 2016. But due to delays in the game, and Atlus not wanting to risk people thinking the game was an ACTUAL social commentary, they changed it to 20XX.

To the point where likely his true method was never figured out, since nobody would believe the TV story. Bonus points if the whole Namatame thing came to light as well.
Well, they should have been asking how, and not why. If I remember correctly, they asked why, and he basically responded "I was bored", or something along those lines. And if you want to get technical, Persona 5 could be considered a social commentary about the actions of adults and how those in power can ruin people's lives, without having to be anything specific. I do understand why they got rid of the year though, considering the state of politics around the world, especially in the United States.
