Who did you date in Persona 4/5? (Obvious spoilers)
I decided to leave out 3, because you're kind of forced to date if you want maxed social links to my knowledge. This isn't made to cause a "waifu" war, but I'm just interested in seeing others choices, and why they picked them. Their own personal reasons. For both my picks, I kinda fell in love quite quickly. And I only dated them every playthrough. For Persona 4, I picked Naoto Shirogane. I always had this interest in being a detective, and still do. I actually prefer tomboys/androgynous girls, and as such, I found her adorable (I even thought she made a cute guy). She's also intelligent, and she has a soft and shy side she tries to hide, and I love that. Also, being someone who has struggled with gender roles, I can definitely relate. I like how she stands up for herself too, and hey... if she wants to "wear the pants" in the relationship... I'd go for that. I'll go either way really. For Persona 5, I picked Futaba Sakura. Apparently, I have a thing for short smart girls (being only 5'7'', I prefer my partners shorter). First off, head patting. That was really cute. And like her, I'm kinda cooped up in my room on my computer all day. While she does seem anxious at first, she has a lot of development and becomes kinda fun to be around and has some great lines (like calling Mishima an NPC, and I like the way she calls you "pretty boy"). Also, I like that more dependent personality she has at times. I'd have a feeling I could get along with either of them, though considering my history, trying dating them might be asking too much, haha. I couldn't cheat on them either, them finding out you cheated on them, both of their scenes were pretty heartbreaking. So, who'd you guys and girls pick and why? I'm genuinely curious. Again, not trying to argue on who's "best girl", or anything. It's more for my own piqued interest. I'd be quite intriguing if some of you seemed to have a pattern, common characteristics between those who were your first pick in these games.
Persona 4, I picked Ayane. I don't think there was a particular reason, really. Maybe I thought she was cute or something? I forget. Persona 5, I picked Makoto. Was going for Futaba at first until I witnessed the build up to Makoto receiving her Persona. It was so satisfying seeing her pick herself up after all the crap she was expected to do from the people around her. Made her a badass. Plus, she's pretty cute.
The only viable answer for waifYu in 4 is the TrYuth
Ayane in 4. I don’t know why, maybe becuase band girls are cute to me? And nobody in 5. I didn’t like any of the girls enough to date them, now if I could date guys in that game it would be a different story.
All these Ayane fans.... maybe if she didn't look like a 10 year old with perma-blush I could see it. No, I dated Marie. And then after realizing dating her sucks, I dated Yukiko instead. In P5 I dated Makoto because her PS4 theme won me over. In a replay I'd probably pick Haru or Tae or Chihaya. P5 had a lot more good waifus.
P5: Futaba P4: Chie Both great girls, but Chie I actually ship with someone else.
All these Ayane fans.... maybe if she didn't look like a 10 year old with perma-blush I could see it. Uh....I question what I was thinking back then.

In 4 I actually dated Rise. She was the only girl who actually tries to go for the protag first and I guess I respect that more than some of the more passive approaches by the other girls. As for 5, uh, I did actually dated Makoto. It's kind of become weird to me for P5 characters because while they're good there's a certain something about their designs that I can't really get over aesthetically.
Well, regarding Rise, she seemed a bit too obsessive for my taste. While there was a point where I think I would've wanted that in my life, it turns out I didn't. Although, I'm not big on her overly bubbly attitude either, kind of the same reason I wasn't huge on Ann. I'm surprised by all the people who like Ayane. Her overly lolicon appearance is what turned me off, but if that's what you guys are into, that's cool. As someone who can probably pass for barely just going into high school despite being a high school graduate, I can get people who are older look younger sometimes. But it does not help I actually had a very bad experience with a band girl, so maybe that continued on into my playthrough. I do really like the conversation though. These choices are really surprising to me. I thought a lot more people liked Chie or Yukiko. Naoto seemed to be a relatively popular pick as well, though I can see how the "reverse trap" thing about her can turn a lot of people off.
I will always prefer Hifumi Togo. Her Valentine's Day with Joker made it for me. Can't imagine him with anyone else. Akira comes off introverted with a bit of a sarcastic edge to me, so the girls who are more like that too (Haru, Hifumi, and Makoto, I don't think he would ever see Futaba beyond family) fit the best for me. I also liked Makoto initially, but she's too uptight to be a good match for him, I feel. They have differing interests and paths in life. Haru was the only girl visibly shaken by a romantic rejection, so she'd be my second choice (I might do her my next time) but overall I like Hifumi most. Soft spoken but determined describes both of them, and I like a coupling where they support one another but remain separate. The Christmas Eve date really fits best to an outsider too, and Hifumi is the only introvert who is not on the team. And I like to think Joker considers her beside him in battle whenever he frequently uses the skills she taught him.

I never really saw the whole "sister" thing with Futaba. The comparison made to Nanako is quite ridiculous. It's a very different dynamic. I don't even think she really treats Joker like a brother, especially after the obvious crush comes about, which doesn't happen with all the characters, unlike in Persona 4, where it's obvious all the girls want to ride with Yu like there's no tomorrow. I did like Hifumi myself, and probably would have been my second choice. With Haru, well, coaxing me into feeling bad about the rejection, not really going to work, at least for me.
I like you reply in depth. You're making discussion. For Futaba, I disagree. Her level 9, ie, 'crush' to me came off as naive confusion. Yes, she did have a crush on him, but she didn't know it. Just that being around him made her feel weird. And to further insinuate it, if Joker turns her down, by saying "that feeling is friendship", unlike someone more mature and aware of her feelings, like that Haru example, Futaba is 100% accepting of it, and even giddy that friendship makes her feel that way. Crush is eliminated. And it makes sense she thinks like this too. She's just a year younger, but socially, is still a small child. To actually agree to it feels like coercing a child who doesn't know better. Pretty creepy. So I like imagining he views her as his sister he will always be there for, not as a girlfriend.
I don't think the crush is eliminated, but that you're telling her what she's feeling, which is quite manipulative. I guess I couldn't date anyone my own age because I'm also sheltered and didn't have a real friend till about high school. Even Sojiro didn't seem to have a major problem with it, even when he should have a problem more than anybody. You can imagine her being a sister. That's fine. My problem certainly stems when people shame those who pick Futaba, when there's much more, for lack of better word, "taboo" relationships in Persona 5. You get your teacher to pick, and a few other women in their 20s. And they don't seem to have a problem with those. Not bagging on anyone who pick those women either - it's the double standard, and I'd say dating Futaba is really objectively "better" than Takemi, Kawakami, Ohya, and Chihuya.
The fact Futaba quickly accepts that reasoning and doesn't showcase any other emotions implies to me that is the case. And everything I knew about her beforehand lined up with that. I see her as someone definitely not ready for a relationship. No one is saying Futaba is the ultimate taboo or taboo in general. But I know I found it more creepy to hook up than anything else. Because it comes off solely as manipulation, rather than mutual attraction between people.

Same here with the p4 choice and explanation but I would go for Haru in p5 because she acts very delicate and innocent and that’s what I normally go for.
Well, it was mutual attraction. And it's not like you do much aside from a hug and head patting. Plus, when you are dating her, it kinda shows she knows what she's doing. She straight up flirts with you every time, calling you "pretty boy" and "hot stuff" (if I remember that last one correctly). Along with this, there are other instances of things not quite connecting. I wouldn't expect someone like Naoto to date either. She actually says in her link she's not interested, it's just an "entanglement" and low and behold, she does it anyway.
Because that's how you treat a serious girlfriend... Headpats and hugs.
Well, I'm sure you don't just say "pretty boy" and "hot stuff" to someone you're not involved with in that matter. There's never anything that imitate within the Persona games.
That only further illustrates Futaba's awkwardness in the matter to me, and how even when accepting her, it comes across as humoring the 'relationship' and not so much anything actually serious.

Because that's how you treat a serious girlfriend... Headpats and hugs. I'm not sure if that's sarcasm (if not then my bad) but serious relationships do involve hugs and headpats. Actually, headpats might be a stretch. Idk maybe if your GF is short?
(edited by filthyllama)
I’m guessing they would give me head pats because I am very short.

Actually, headpats might be a stretch. Idk maybe if your GF is short? To be fair, maybe that's why it isn't weird to me. It sounds like something I would do to be honest. That aside, to TogoSystem, I don't know why the awkwardness is such a big deal. They're teenagers. Teenagers tend to be awkward with that kind of thing. And if you've seen her when she gets cheated on, she seems to take it harder than pretty much all of them.
My point was none of Akira's other relationships are like that. He doesn't headpat anyone but Futaba because that's generally not boyfriend behavior. That's something you do to a child and would normally be very condescending to a girlfriend. The awkwardness isn't age, nor is it anyone else but Futaba. All your points only further illustrate to me why Futaba shouldn't be in a relationship so soon.
P4-Ayane who was also the first social link I ever maxed out. Back then, I thought I actually had to do the band practice and whatever other stuff, so I kept doing it whenever those days came unless I had TV world stuff to do. P5- Kawakami because she's the closest I'll ever get to banging a hot teacher and she's one of my favorite confidants. I also really like the 180 of her going from hating your guts and wanting nothing to do with you to being so close to wanting to ride your sack.
Persona 3: Aigis because I love me some robots. Persona 4: Chie because if I was gonna go with Naoto, I'd feel like I'm cheating out Kanji and I'd feel bad for him.

She takes it harder because your family betraying you would sting worse than a boyfriend, I think. In the same vein as that. I still doubt she, even when he's humoring her, truly understands what their pairing actually is, apart from just 'closeness'. And again, being teenagers is not an excuse. More than half of them are the same age, and none of them have the same naivety that Futaba demonstrates.

Persona 3: Aigis because I love me some robots. Persona 4: Chie because if I was gonna go with Naoto, I'd feel like I'm cheating out Kanji and I'd feel bad for him. Meh. Regarding Naoto, she's never made much indication of being interested in Kanji as it is. Hell, she showed zero interest in anyone at the beginning of her social link. In Persona 4, it seems pretty much everyone wants to be with the protagonist. Unlike in Persona 5, where at times, they don't seem that interested until you confess.

Sure, he liked Naoto... when she was a "guy" to everybody. So he liked her under the impression that she had a penis. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Huh. Means that's another reason I gotta go replay Persona 4. To brush up on my P4 knowledge and to actually do Naoto's Social Link.
(edited by filthyllama)
Well, what is there to brush up on exactly? Did you never do her social link?
First time through in 4, I wanted to date Naoto, but I wasn't smart enough until I was past the point I could have actually done so, so I went with Yukiko instead. In P5, I went with Futaba, because adorable.
P4: first time through I did Yukiko but as of now i'm trying to be a playa. P5: I'm currently dating Kawakami

In P5, I went with Futaba, because adorable. I agree with Futaba, she is adorable. I do forget with Naoto. When I found out, I maxed my knowledge and courage as quick as I could. She won't even consider talking to you till you got balls of steel (courage), and is as smart as she is.

That brick walled me for a good 3 months in-game.
True with that point about Makoto. I think I just gave up on her social link. I'm already at 11/29 in game, and she's stuck there. Same with Yusuke because my proficiency is too low. Haru's also stuck as well. The only party links I've ended up maxing I think is Futaba and Ryuji. About to finish up Ann as well.
Ignore them and max your stats for NG+ Believe me, a game without the need for social stat grinding is so much better.
(edited by TogoSystem)
Well, I ignored Mishima and Ohya entirely. I didn't like them as characters really, so they're worth ignoring. My guts seem to be really low for some reason, only rank 3.
Persona 4: Rise, she just really nice and caring Persona 5 Futaba. I have a much longer reason for why I like Futaba. Futaba is extremely cute to me. I relate to her a little. We have a lot of the same like and act roughly similar. I also guess I have a thing for shy, short girls in glasses. Plus Futaba is a savage and very reliable
Mishima is pretty obnoxious but his confidant is basically free if you keep up on Mementos. And I'm amazed you beat the game without leaning on his abilities. Did you abuse flu season or something?

Yeah, it's almost impossible to even skip Mishima unless you just ignore Mementos entirely... And that's going to make the last bit of the game REEEEEAAALLLLLLY long.

In Persona 5 I dated Ann Takamiki-san in I don't know too me, I like her flashy looks but I like the way she thinks and acts all together that's my kind of girl.

Yes, I can agree there.
Mishima is pretty obnoxious but his confidant is basically free if you keep up on Mementos. And I'm amazed you beat the game without leaning on his abilities. Did you abuse flu season or something? No, I haven't quite beat the game yet. I don't think I ever went in during Flu Season. If you're referring to the Reaper, I never once encountered him. Just finished beating the traitor and his father. I've been about par on level with the bosses if the levels on the Megami Tensei level is correct. I've even skipped battles here and there, and only die usually with cheap kills or getting surrounded which doesn't happen often, and Futaba can sometimes Position Hack it. I'm not sure what all the concern is, I really only had a big problem with Kamoshida's dungeon. Haven't had a problem since. Especially with bosses, I've been pretty solid. With Mementos, I also ignored the gaming cheater as well (and the Tower link entirely). I tend to ignore a lot the first playthrough. I max only characters I like and social stats, levels became secondary. I skipped a lot actually, Jesus. I never started Tower, Sun, Hanged Man, and gave up on Devil. Funny, kinda how I ignored Saki's brother and the old lady on Persona 4.

I skipped a lot actually, Jesus. I never started Tower, Sun, Hanged Man, and gave up on Devil. Funny, kinda how I ignored Saki's brother and the old lady on Persona 4. Aw man, you missed out on Yoshida. That guy's one of my favorite Confidants. And I thought Mishima was pretty cool by the end of his story.
Well, for me, I tend to immerse myself in the game quite a bit. I'm not too fond of adult men, really. Not sure why, just an anxiety thing. Along with this, it took me a while to figure out everyone available was listed on the map. Took me even longer for me to find him on the location. The location are far bigger than what I'm used to in Persona 4. And when I finally did find out where he was, it was far too late in the game for it to really matter. I'll probably wait for New Game Plus. In Persona 4, I only maxed Yosuke, Chie, and Naoto (because I always max the GF) I think on my first playthrough. Could have maxed others, but can't remember.
Immersion is why I don't like missing or skipping things.
(edited by TogoSystem)
Funny, immersion is exactly why I skip things. If I find you to be an incredibly annoying person (like Mishima), I will want to interact with you as little as possible. I don't think I've found a character I disliked more. Except for Adachi, but that's for a different reason.
Ryuji and Yosuke obviously

I don't think I've found a character I disliked more. Except for Adachi, but that's for a different reason. It's opposite for me, because I like to play in-character. I hate playing as myself. I like set characters. Akira likes them, thus I do it. It's not me. It's him. Just different play styles I guess. But I know I never like missing or skipping anything.
Well, like most silent protagonists, Joker doesn't have a clear-cut personality. With your responses, you can be a nice guy... or kinda dickish. I don't generally play as myself, I play differently depending on the character. I even voice them if voices aren't present. If a character does have a set personality, then yes, I would often play towards that.
