Well, first episode is done. Figured I'd get it done early (in my timezone), for extra fun. It was... all right, honestly.
For a Persona series, the beginning actually had a pretty welcome, darker tone, a slower approach it feels like. Which is odd I guess since it took less time for Shin to awaken his Persona than maybe anyone else in this franchise. The setup of the mystery feels kind of poor though, it's quick to throw terms like Latency, Reverse, and the 'Odo Contamination' at us, without really explaining much and it's never been a method that blended well with me. Though to be fair they kind of did explain the Reverse case in part.
The OP theme, Breakin' Through, is pretty catchy, I like it, though I would have expected more from Persona. It's good, but a generic kind of good. I'll enjoy it while I watch the show but I don't expect it to stick with me. Jumping ahead a bit, the ED is also a bit disappointing, the song is kind of nice. I find it rather soothing despite it carrying a name like Suicides Love Story, though the disappointment here comes from a lack of animating, only panning across a fairly surreal but static image. Also Lotus Juice is here, so the music at least will most likely be enjoyable if nothing else.
The focus on a family here is another welcome choice, I think I might be able to appreciate at least this. Though it's clearly not the most loving family around. Shin and Jun seem to be fairly close, but Ryo comes across as an ass. I understand he's focused on his job but the least he could do was make sure Shin and Jun could get in the house instead of just assuming they'd remember after a decade. Shin so fair seems to be as plain a Persona protagonist as expected, though Jun seems a bit concerning with whatever is going on with him and his 'twin'.
I'm a bit confused by the appearance of Igor here, I mean him showing up was expecting, but it seems odd for himself to be wearing something beyond his usual suit. The fortune teller setup on the street is also a bit strange, though given Shin wakes up moments later... I guess the goddamn street is just his Velvet Room.
I'm going to be honest, I rather like the Personas here. Sure they might resemble a being from another franchise more than usual potentially, but this is perhaps how Personas really should act in Persona anime. Too many times in the anime adaptions we do have of the games do Personas come across as nothing more than spell dispensers, which while accurate to how they are in the games, does not make for an interesting scene. Some choices here, like having some older Persona users like Ryo, Personas appearing in the physical world and having a proper presence actually gives me flashbacks to the early Persona games, and I'd say that's a good sign to a degree.
I do take issue with some things about them, like Shin's Awakening seemed awkward. Perhaps Personas here are more instinctual here than anywhere else. Though given his strange dreams and those statues and drawings he had, perhaps he has already awakened previously. Then there's the weird instance of ripping out another Persona to... absorb it? That's kinda fucked up, though in a way I appreciate it, since Persona tackles some dark themes but it rarely feels like they want to show something so intense. The problem with this is just the fact I don't understand it. I'm sure it will explain later... it better, but it seems the absorbed Personas are fighting back later, causing some huge trouble for the guy. I imagine anyway, that this is what the drugs he tried to take were meant to prevent, but it just seems stupid. I'm curious what the benefit could possibly be.
So uh... I mean, I didn't hate it. I probably will later, but so far it's fine enough, and actually kind of an interesting take.
