A fractal perspective
Before we get started, a note. This thread will be a rather exposition-heavy thread explaining much of my ongoing plot, as such it will have spoilers for the current thread “The Devil of the Mansion”, and as such if you are participating there I will suggest you don’t read this. Per usual, I will use an “update whenever you can” system, and if one is going to be away for more than 24 hours, please tell me, as I would prefer to update at least that frequently, however, exceptions can be made. Without further ado In a rundown neighborhood shooting off of Tokyo lies a district filled with minor attractions, pawn shops, and... Shadier dealings. In the shadow of these residences lies a single hall of mirrors, it’s sign having said “closed” for the past few weeks. There’s a new sign up front today, reading “Help wanted. Paranormal experts suggested, no need to apply.” As such, the front door is left, though closed, it is as of yet unlocked
this seems like a better time to bump, more people about. No harm done either way at least
a boy would be walking around when he noticed the sign "paranormal investigator, I guess a necromancer would count." he would walk in to enquire about the job
OOC: I don’t have much time today unfortunately but is this the same hall of mirrors as the thread from before?
think so
yes it is
A woman wearing leather punk style clothes covered in tattoos walked by. Today was her off day anyways so she was looking for some type of excitement. When she saw the sign she couldn't help but think this was interesting. After all, considering her actual profession this was right up her ally. She walked in looming forward to what she'd find.
A young man wearing a gray coat with a hood pulled up to cover most of his face would once again return to the hall of mirrors. He'd nervously look around even in the reflection of any nearby windows that might be at the front of any stores. He would most likely seem overly paranoid to anyone watching him unless they knew what he had experienced before. Regardless he wouldn't even notice the sign at the front as he was more interested in returning to the hall to see if the woman from before had found anything since he was last here. He'd immediately try to enter the facility once again and attempt to see if the woman was present today. "Hello? You here right now? Sorry to barge in but I'm here about what we talked about before."
Alex, Raven, and Quintus would walk in to find an older, bespectacled woman with a few boxes on the front counter of the business, at the moment she was looking at an almost ancient book, still covered in dust when she hears the door open. The woman looks up, chuckling to herself before nodding Good, good. As you can see I’ve been pretty busy Quintus. I think I’ve finally learned the true nature of that mirror demon. And what we can do about it. Though I may have uncovered a bigger problem in the meantime. Come over, have a look. The woman gestures to the book in her hands, holding it open for others to read
the boy would raise a skeleton to carry him so that he could see over the others
Quintus would begin walking over towards the book in order to take a look at it. It seemed that waiting was worth it in the end but he was curious about the bigger issue the woman mentioned. Perhaps this situation was more serious than he first believed. He wouldn't even acknowledge the other for the moment either. It wasn't as if he was trying to ignore them but he was more fearful of what the mirror demon could do than he was of leaving a bad impression. "Well, anything will probably help. Even if its bad then we just need to be wary of whatever it is for the future."
33 would walk up to the counter slowly as she looks around the store. Was it a book store or and antic store? She would stop after a few steps in upon the realization that some of the things in this store had magical properties. Somehow she began to think that this was going to turn from a nice detour to kill boredom to becoming actual work. If her instincts were right then she would end up having to investigate this later as a supernatural case anyways so she turned to the counter ready to ask what the job was. Upon seeing Quintus already talking to the woman she didn't want to interrupt them. She would instead continue to look around and identify anything out of the ordinary within the store and wait for them to finish. Besides, she's aware she has an naturally intimidating face so she doesn't want to further give them a bad impression.
33 would find the store to not be much of a store at all, the front is rather barren, aside from the collection of boxes with various books scattered around, with no tags on them, there's another sign near the a pair of black curtains near the back of the room saying "entry, 1000 yen", likely leading to the attraction itself. The page the woman's book is open to has pictures of several objects, a sword, a wineglass, a set of handmirrors, a spoon, a bizarre set of blades, small enough to be scissors, a key, and finally, what looks like a human girl. The woman reads the words accompanying the pictures Woman: Throughout history seven cursed objects have emerged, as from a slumber time and time again. The Venom Sword, the Glass of Conchita, the Four Mirrors, the Marlon Spoon, the Twin Blades of Leventia, Grim the End, and the Clockworker's Doll. Each were known to be inhabited by a demon of unimaginable power. Once one has awoken, its only a matter of time for the others to show themselves, almost as though they're linked. As for the demon you found here..... ???: I think its about time you let me handle the expositing grandma. A smug voice familiar only to Quintus would come from one of the nearest boxes, hidden beneath a book, one can see the edge of a single, small mirror, much like one might use to put on makeup
Quintus would immediately step back in fear once hearing the voice. He would try to get away from the book as fast as possible and make sure his hood was still properly on, hoping that perhaps it would protect him. “You again? Why here? Didn’t you already have a host? Dammit, I was careless...” He’d begin panicking as his paranoia began acting up once more in full effect.
33 would stare on in intrigue. Wasn't the strangest thing she'd come across but definitely not something she could ignore either. The mirror seemed to give off a type of energy as well. Magic? No, this was something old and far more vile. Was it a curse? The being speaking from within the mirror also, was it a familiar or was it as the old lady said, a demon. After seeing Quintus reaction to the the thing she became a bit more wary. Did he say host, like a parasite or possession. This mirrors danger level just shot up in her mind. She began to secretly circulate the mana in her body just in case. "You know that thing? Mind explaining." she asked while making a vain attempt to look less intimidating
The voice chuckles faintly, apparently amused. The older woman just sighs and removes the mirror, within which all that can be seen is a shadowy, humanoid figure ??: Wow, if I knew my voice freaked you out that much I’d’ve said something earlier. Don’t worry though, I’d have to get a good view of your whole body in the reflection without distance distorting it. Which would be pretty impressive to manage with such a small one. As for the boy, he’s unharmed, for now. Woman: Don’t bother making empty threats like that, it’s a waste of your time. ??: Fine, fine. It’s more accurate to say a fifth of me is with the kid, the other four fifths are split among these hand mirrors. Considered too dangerous to contain in one relic, so they split me into more. Long as I’m like this, afraid the other six are far more of an issue. For now I’d suggest reading on. the next page describes a method of bonding with these relics, granting access to the demon’s powers including invulnerability, fortune, pestilence, and even access to the demon’s form, according to the demon contracted with ??: and considering how active I am, it’s safe to say the others are probably active too. With their powers getting abused like hell.
the boy's skeleton would take the mirror at the boy's command "so where are the others exactly?" he would say
33 sighs as she looks at the mirror. I feel like this is more up Alice-sama's alley. Not like I have the authority to ask her for anything." She would then look at the skeleton that takes the mirror at the boys command and reaffirms that this might be a little out of her league. Regardless she still nods to the boys question. "Yeah, I assume this is the reason you're hiring for supernatural investigators right? So spit it out already. Where exactly are these other cursed artifacts and how should we handle them. Also, if they already found a host should we kill them too or is there a way to separate them?
the boy would look towards 33 and ask "So what are you guys, anyway? I'm a necromancer, obviously." *the skeleton turns toward 33*

"I'm a tattoo artist with an interest in the supernatural. Not really anything special." She replied as she showed her arms that were covered in tattoos to show him some of her work. The tattoos no doubt covered the parts of her body that were covered by her clothes. The tattoos themselves were in black and white little color found anywhere but they were intricate and very detailed, almost as if she printed high quality art onto her body that should be placed in a museum. She then handed him a card with the words Royal Tattoos on it. "If you any of your friends ever want to get inked call that number" her sharp gaze softening just a bit
gtg soon
not sure if you read the first post Alex, but the thread is “post whenever”. We’re not progressing until everyone has posted. That’s the point

Quintus would slowly back away from the others. The conversation seemed to overwhelm him slightly. Instead, he'd try to go over things slowly. So, multiple hand mirrors that the demon was split between, seemed like the nature of this demon was more complicated then he had originally anticipated. "Alright, I suppose that all makes sense. Read on, right? Guessing there's more to this." He'd briefly glance over at the others. He was a bit too paranoid to reveal the extent of his nature as others were sometimes apprehensive when they learned of it. "I'm just someone who happens to find a lot of interest in things like this. I don't exactly like the idea of people running around with dangerous artifacts. Especially if the unpredictable nature of demons is involved." He'd quickly glance back in the direction of the mirror. "No offense..." Finally he'd attempt to take another look at the book to further see what else might be written.
the shadowy figure within the mirror chuckles, a wide, white smile covering most of its face ??: I've been stuck in a mirror for hundreds of years and you seriously think I know where the others are? Come on. I thought you humans were smarter than that. I mean seriou.... The older woman sighs, clearing her throat, interrupting the demon old woman: Anyways, the point is we don't know where, but they are usually used to cause chaos. Things like the Black Plague, Pompeii, countless revolutions and assassinations, all have been attributed to at least one of these at some point. As for their hosts... ??: I'll take this one grandma. You make it sound like us demons control or possess them. But contracts don't quite work that way. They were designed by humans, for humans, to take advantage of my awesome power. You meet someone with an artifact, and you can be sure as hell they'd never give it up. Guess there's nothing to do but kill 'em. The demon shrugs, nonchalantly leaning against the side of the mirror, white eyes closed Meanwhile, Quintus continues reading, the next page details the nature of contracts, in which one person's blood mingles with the relic's demonic energy in order to form a link between relic and master. This link grows weaker over distance, and with it so too will any powers the relic might have granted. Though the bond is never truly destroyed, and exposure to the demon again is capable of fully reawakening their link
Alex would poke quintus and ask “you seem to be a magic user as well, what kind of magic is that, but more importantly how do you know this guy?” he would turn the page to one describing the relics and their effects
Quintus would ponder over the meaning of this passage. Could the mirror demon have made a pack with someone else perhaps or was the one it possessed the pact holder? He didn't recall any blood being involved in such a process and he failed to see any power that could have been gained through such a pack. It seemed more likely that perhaps the mirror demon was acting on its own, maybe. Regardless he was just more confused by this then he was before. His reading would be interrupted by Alex's questions. "Did I say I used magic? All I said is I have an interest in this stuff. Besides, unlike some people, I don't really like showing off or bragging about what I can do. If you're talking about the demon in the mirror, let's just say I had a not so friendly encounter with one of their other halves. You'd do best to be wary of that demon. I don't really see a reason for it to lie but I don't exactly think it tells the whole truth."
33 would simply lean back against the nearby wall as she listened to the two. One was a necromancer the ravens had already collected data on while the other was someone who'd been flying under the radar for who knows how long. To top it off this Quintus seemed to have a strange connection to demons. Her own power was made more for healing and combat not for purifying curses and such. "How much can you say for certain is truth. Since you seem to have some experience in this then I assume you know what to do next right?"
The shadowy demon grins, leaning against the edge of the handmirror, arms crossed ??: If you guys are so concerned about me lying, you could always form a contract with me. I'd have no choice but to answer to your every whim. That and its pretty close to the only way for you useless humans to stand a chance agai.... The demon is interrupted by the elderly woman, finally grabs the mirror and wraps it up in a bundle of cloth from one of the nearby boxes, muffling whatever he may have said after that Woman: I think that's about enough for now. He's been trying to get me to form one for the past week. Not sure why he's so insistent. More importantly, if you guys can find all of the artifacts and bring them here, I should be able seal them away for good. Or at least, until someone figures out how to undo it. There's no real way to destroy them, at least not without letting the demon out, so sealing seems like our best chance
33 would look at the mirror wrapped in cloth. As much as she wants to blurt out that she knows people who can get rid of the demons and the curse all at once the truth is she didn't even have many chances to get into contact with them. Any message she would try to send would have to go through zero and even then it would still take some time. She sighed as she looked at the old woman. "Then do you have any idea how we can search for them. Maybe some kind of radar or talisman (Like something that convenient would just appear right)")
Quintus would simply take his eyes away from the book for the moment. It seemed apparent where this all was going but how to proceed was the question still lingering in his mind. Before anything else, he thought it wise to try to asses their options. "A reference to where these artifacts were held might at very least be useful. If we don't know where they are now then investigating where they once were could give us some clues. At very least I remember the face of the guy who has another part of the mirror demon stuck to him but I don't know how useful that would even be. Unless we have a place to start with these artifacts I think we're stuck for the moment."
"okay..."
"I have a few connections that might be able to give us a lead. Can you describe to me any special characteristics of these cursed items?" A few information brokers she knew probably has some type of info and she was sure that if there were items this dangerous around then there was a high chance the Ravens probably had records on them that could be dug up. She just needed a little more detail. Something about the items themselves that stood out. Can't exactly tell her people to look for information on scissors right?
The old woman pauses for a moment, before reaching into the box the mirror was previously in to pull out a small, leatherbound book Woman: While there is no particular method for finding these, or official records of their abilities, I did find this journal full of events which at least one of these relics were rumored to have been linked to. The Glass of Conchita was mostly linked to diseases, especially those in smaller areas. Grim the End has only been linked to assassinations, though they're spread so far apart and in such a short time there's no telling how many of them are real. The Clockworker's Doll has had nothing linked to it so far, so perhaps its more passive than the others. Beyond that there doesn't seem to be much of a pattern for them I'm afraid.
Quintus would listen closely to the descriptions of each artifact and what seemed to either be their use or ability. He'd stare at the book in the women's hand before beginning to speak once more. "That's a good start for sure. If it's alright for you could I take a look at that book? It might be useful at very least for dealing with each artifact without any incident. I'd rather at least have some reference towards what we may be facing."
grim the end would be nice. Alex thought to himself but the cup would suck.
Alex would snap out of it and would ask the woman, "what about the holders of these relics, like would they have powers? Like to fight us, that is."
"Still not much to go on but at least its something. The abilities sound like they'd be a pain in the ass to deal with if we come across them so counter measures need to be taken" She stood of the wall and began to pat herself down as she felt like dust had begun to cling to her body. When was the last time this place was actually cleaned. She walked over to Quintus and looked over his shoulder to see the book. There might be something they were missing. Humans had a strange way of overthinking things and missing the obvious.
The older woman, shrugs, handing the book over to Quintus Woman: If you think it'll be of some help. Its mostly based on rumors, so the accuracy is questionable, but I guess its better than nothing. Sorry there's not much more to go on. The book is separated into segments for each artifact, with a list of events they were rumored to be involved in, notably the Glass was connected with the Black Plague, the Twin Blades were said to be related to the death of Abel and the fall of Alexander's Macedonia, the Venom Sword had no major events to its name, and almost all of those related are disappearances, The handmirrors were said to be involved in the Roman Empire's split, but seem to have vanished shortly after. The Marlon Spoon was largely connected to government scandals, rather than major disasters. Grim the End has the longest list, rumored to be involved in the death of many major political figures, and finally, the segment for the Clockwork Doll is just a single page with several sketches of a human with long hair and a frilly dress and half sentences that end in question marks. As for Alex, the older woman sighs and crosses her arms on the counter. Woman: Did you zone out for a minute? Odds are if someone is using the relic they've made a contract with the demon inside and are using its powers for their own gain. Whatever that may be
I'll have to be gone for at least a week
Alex will just be following the other s while I'm gone
well, at the rate the Devil of the Manor thread is going you won't miss much
Quintus would look over the book thoroughly trying to link the events in his mind to anything he could immediately figure out. He'd think for a moment on the artifacts and what they were linked to as a whole, trying to deduce which would be the easiest to find first. "I'd say the easiest to find would be the one with most events attached to it. However, 'Grim the End' as it's called seems to be some kind of tool of assassination if I were to guess. I doubt something like would be easy to find despite its predictability. 'The Marlon Spoon' would also be one I think would be good to start with. Government scandals are something that happens quite frequently and it would only involve having to investigate the darker side of politics which I believe while not exactly safe would at least be more manageable than the others. The rest either seemed to be related to old events or just don't have much on them. 'The Clockwork Doll' is especially interesting. There's almost nothing on it which would leave me to believe that encountering it would either involve tracking the individual that these sketches are of or simply finding it out of luck." Quintus would finally acknowledge the others, specifically 33. "You seem to have some knowledge when it comes to gathering information or tracking things. What do you believe would be best to start with?"
"The glass will take some time but I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult getting information on something from the 1340's that survived up until now. Just need to check a few accounts and I can probably get information on that in three days to a week." she pondered over what Quintus said for a few moments before finally replying "Honestly, Grim the End is something I wouldn't want to get too involved in. Its one thing to get involved with politics but something else entirely when getting involved in it darker sides. If we're talking Assassinations then we'd be dealing with the underworld and the fact its a long list would actually make it harder to follow the trail without being noticed ourselves." After walking around a bit so her legs would wake up she then looked at Quintus. "The Marlon spoon in my opinion would be one of the hardest to find. Trying to find the start of rumors that led to scandals and such is like trying to find the beginning of a frayed rope after its been tangled. Honestly, Grim the End would be the easiest to find but it also has the higher risk."
The older woman yawns, wrapping her handmirror back up and hiding it away in one of the several boxes Woman: Whatever it is you decide, I wish the best of luck. I'm no expert in these things, and it is getting rather late, so for now I believe I must go. The woman flips a switch under the counter, causing a ladder to fall down behind her. The woman sighs before storing the mirror away under the counter and heading upstairs to rest while I have nothing to really contribute here, so there is no need to wait for me, I do still plan on watching. Though I already have plans, this talk here will influence the order of threads made to some extent. So by all means, continue without me
"Right now I'd say the glass would probably be for the best for now but as I said it would take a couple days to track it down. If you don't feel like waiting then we can try Grim the End but just be aware that you could possibly end up on the wrong side of politics and become enemy of state if you dive to deep. I'd like your opinion on the matter." she said as she turned her sharp intimidating eyes to Quintus.
