Mono's Reviews: Kirby Super Star Ultra
WARNING: This review might have some bias. This is a game I have loved since childhood, so I might give praise for parts that don’t need it. Remember to take what I say with a pinch of salt. Hope you enjoy the review. Kirby Super Star Ultra is a remake of the classic SNES game, Kirby Super Star or Kirby's FunPak if you are from Europe and Australia, for the Nintendo DS. I have loved this game ever since I got it when it came out in 2008. It has seven main sub-games from the original, and four new ones exclusive to the remake. It was my first Kirby game and one I still hold in high regard, but does it deserve that? I’m going to check that out. For this review, I’m going to look at each sub-game individually. This is to judge the quality of each sub-game packaged in, rather than all the sub-games together. First off: Spring Breeze. SPRING BREEZE: Spring Breeze is the only game available when you start the game and is a remake of the original Kirby’s Dreamland on the Gameboy. King Dedede has stolen all of the food in Dreamland, and Kirby is tasked to give the people their food back. It is a relatively short game. It took me six minutes to beat it from beginning to the defeat of Dedede. While I would say that’s a negative, it is a good beginning for new players to get used to the controls of the game. You get used to the ability to make helpers by pressing the X button when you have a copy ability. Spring Breeze is also the only game that can be played via DS Download Play if you don’t have a cart, but a friend does. However, if you and a friend have a cart, you can play the entire game with them. Overall, Spring Breeze gets an 8 out of 10. After you beat Spring Breeze, you unlock Dynablade and Gourmet Race. DYNABLADE: Dynablade is the second game in the collection. The story goes that Dynablade is ruining all the crops and food in Dreamland. Go stop her. The world is shown with a world map rather than levels going back to back. You go from one level to the next trying to get to Dynablade’s home on the mountain. You can search some levels for switches that allow you to access places on the map that allows you to pick different abilities. There is also a boss that will appear on the map that you can fight for a one-up. Once you make it to the top of the mountain, you fight Dynablade. She will fly around, try to grab you, and try to kill you. Once you beat her, you discover that she was just trying to get food for her babies. Kirby brings the babies to food, and they all live happily ever after. Dynablade gets an 8 out of 10. After you beat this mode, you unlock The Great Cave Offensive. GOURMET RACE: So let’s go back to this mode. Gourmet Race is a race against Dedede to see who can eat the most food and get to the end as fast as possible. That is it. That is all that the mode is. It does have some really good music but other than that, it is just a simple race to the end. It gets a 6/10 from me.
THE GREAT CAVE OFFENSIVE: This is the fourth game and the second weakest game in this collection. Kirby is walking when he falls down a hole into a cave. He, now, has to get out of the cave. While he is in the cave, he finds treasure. There are 60 pieces of treasure. You can either get 60 pieces of treasure or none at all. You can even skip one of the levels if you don’t want to get any treasure. There are four areas each with their own bosses. It gets boring around halfway through if you go after all of the treasures… like I did. Overall, this gets a 7/10 from me. After you beat this mode, you unlock Revenge of Meta Knight. REVENGE OF META KNIGHT: This is the fifth game in the collection and the best one here. You, as Kirby, have to stop Meta Knight and his army from taking over Dreamland. You are timed. If you fail to finish the level by the timers end, it’s game over. You are tasked to rushing from one level to another, battling bosses, and following the “plot” that is told throughout your playtime. It ends with a fight against Meta Knight, a chase off the ship while Meta Knight makes his last stand, and then both Kirby and his wheely friend ride off with credits playing like it was a movie. I give this a 9/10. Once you beat this, you unlock Milky Way Wishes. MILKY WAY WISHES: This is the sixth game in the collection and is one of the weirdest. The sun and moon are fighting over dominance of the sky. A jester looking guy named Marx tells our boy Kirb that he needs to get the star pieces from different planets in order to summon NOVA so he can grant you one wish. Kirby decides to listen to the shady jester and heads to the sky to summon NOVA. The big thing that sets it apart from the other modes is that you can’t use copy abilities via inhaling enemies. Instead, you have to search around for spots that will give you the ability it has. You can, then, use that ability whenever you want by touching the icon for that ability on the touch screen. After going from planet to planet, you reach NOVA. Once you were ready to make your wish, Marx appears and instead wishes to take over Popstar. NOVA flies towards Popstar and Marx turns into a demon. The star pieces come together and give Kirby the use of a Starship. He chases towards NOVA. This is where you take part in a shoot-em-up stage where you battle towards NOVA’s core, then the core itself. After you finish that, you do and fight Marx, easily one of the best final bosses in Kirby History. He will attack you by splitting apart and pulling you into a vortex, use an ice beam, or pop out of the ground. After this, Marx will fly into NOVA, causing it to explode. Kirby, satisfied, flies back to Popstar and goes to bed. The credits roll, and the “game” ends. I give this a 9/10. After you beat this, you unlock Revenge of the King and The Arena.
REVENGE OF THE KING: This is a harder mode of Spring Breeze. Levels are different, enemies are harder, and bosses are even harder. King Dedede is back and wants to end this rivalry with Kirby once and for all. Bosses that were in the original game, but not in Spring Breeze show up, like Kabula. Once you get to his castle, you go through a gauntlet of enemies including Bandana Dee, you go battle Dedede with his new hammer. Afterward, you see a scene of Dedede walking down a road with all of his Waddle Dees following him, showing they will follow him even if he is no longer king. This gets a 9/10. After you beat this mode, you unlock Meta Knightmare. META KNIGHTMARE: Meta Knightmare is the same as the version included with Nightmare in Dreamland but set with all the sub-games in the original Super Star and with added Touch Screen buttons. The buttons on the screen with either allows you to summon an ally with 2 points, move fast with 8 points, heal with 10 points and use Mach Tornado with 30 points. You get points by defeating enemies. The max amount of points you can have is 50. You go from level to level trying to beat it as fast as you can. It ends with a fight with the most powerful warrior in the galaxy, Galacta Knight. Once you beat him, the sub-game ends. This will unlock nothing. This mode gets an 8/10. THE ARENA / THE TRUE ARENA:: The Arena is a boss rush mode. You select your ability from the start then you go from battle to battle with a break each battle. In the break room, you have several maxim tomatoes. Once you use one, it is replaced with a regular healing item. Once you use that, it is gone for good. Two of the abilities will appear every time you finish a battle if you want to change or make a new helper. Once you beat the arena and play Helper to Hero once, you unlock The True Arena. The True Arena is a much harder version of the arena and is more foreboding. You fight the Revenge version of bosses, and then the big bosses of the other modes, including Marx Soul. Marx Soul is a much harder Marx and more demented. Once you beat him, he will scream really loud and split apart. The arena ends. You unlock no new modes with the game. This painful but very fun mode gets a 9/10. HELPER TO HERO: This is the last mode of the game besides minigames. You get to play as a helper and have to battle bosses over and over. This is basically The Arena but you play as a helper. It can be challenging if you don’t know how to play as a helper. It gets a 7/10. OVERALL: This is a very fun game, but it has flaws. It has a few modes that are not as high quality as the others but are still fun. It is fun and addictive. Counting up the score from all 10 sections, the game gets an 80 out of 100. This gets a B-.
Not enough bias

(edited by elmco)
The american grading system.
My grading scale is 10 points per letter grade, so that'd be a B-

that's weird for me, but honestly it might just be that i was raised with a weird schooling system 80-100 = A- to A+ 70-79 = B- to B+ 60-69 = C- to C+ 50-59 = D- to D+ <50 = F

My school grade system: 90-100 = A- to A+ 80-89 = B- to B+ 70-79 = C- to C+ 60-69 = D- to D+ (This was still failing) <60 = F 80-100 makes me believe the school system is dumbing itself down a tad, which is not a good thing. Most jobs will not accept less than 90 in the work they are paying you for, so I never really cared for the system's ability to fail in preparing kids for the real world. But that's just my personal bias speaking as a jaded adult.
80-100 makes me believe the school system is dumbing itself down a tad, which is not a good thing. Most jobs will not accept less than 90 in the work they are paying you for, so I never really cared for the system's ability to fail in preparing kids for the real world.i mean, it's the way ontario's doing it, and it's easier to pass, so i'm not complaining. most unis only accept over 85-90 average though, at least the good programs. the easy programs at colleges and such usually require a minimum average of around 65-75(C-B), so even though the grading is different in that sense, the post-secondary education requirements are usually the same (probably because they accept international students along the same guidelines)
the best programs are like over 95 average like engineering at university of waterloo (every type) require a minimum average of either 97 or 98. it's crazy, and i have a friend aiming for it. he's crazy
