Yeah... but other than that and their parallels with their elemental affinities/weaknesses, they don't have a lot to connect them, do they..? i'm sure they're good friends, but when i really think about it, i think makoto/ann has a bit more chemistry...
there's also makoto/futaba, but the age difference combined with how makoto tends to be a tad motherly towards futaba makes me feel reaaaally weird about that ship, so i dunno about that one

killing the bosses unlocks new items in DDS2 but most of these items require you to kill a boss to get them anyway? lol
if you dont kill the boss in DDS1 than the boss in DDS2 just doesnt drop the item its kinda
dumb
its worth making sure you make the right choices in DDS1 though because the choices you make, when you get to make them, can affect
-whether Heat or Roland joins you for the final dungeon, neither is better than the other, just personal preference
-whether or not the protag/Argilla/Gale can inherit their special moves for the final dungeon

I feel it's important to state that Strange Journey is getting a remake. It's up to you whether you want to wait on the remake or just buy it as is. It's only like $20 dollars if you manage to find a copy.

Yeah. Usually I'd suggest to just wait until a remake, but it seems a lot of questionable stuff is happening with Deep Strange Journey.

Also as for the archangels, part of it is that apparently Angels weren't thought of as humanoid until the renaissance period. Up until that point, they were thought of as abominations.
Not to mention that they're supposed to be close to god, a being that is incomprehensible. It'd make sense for them to look a bit odd.
Still, I certainly feel Kaneko's designs have a charm that the redesigns don't.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Honestly I feel they'd have something really good if they toned it back a bit. Like the idea for it seems really nice, but they went way too far from Kaneko's original design.
Like, I feel the point of a redesign should be to reinvent the character while still keeping them familiar.
Because if you showed a picture of the redesigned Gabriel to a fan who hasn't played 4, they'd most likely have NO idea who it is.

Understandable, but now I'm going to have to burn everything you've ever loved.

For real though, It's understandable. The only real games in the mainline that are even in English are Nocturne, 4 and apocalypse.
While Nocturne is definitely great, and 4 IMO is a pretty good game as well, they are just two games.(not really talking about Apocalypse cause... it's apocalypse).
It's kinda hard for the mainline to really shine when it only has 2 games openly available to the west, meanwhile there are a bunch of branching series in the Megaten franchise that you can easily give more attention to.

So personally, I really do love the mainline. Hell, I just love Megaten as a whole, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy all the other games as well. But basically, the TL:DR is that "Mainline is great, but the branching series tend to be the main attraction, and I can't blame anyone for thinking that."

technically not true, i think SMT I and maybe II? did get english releases finally.... for iOS
i did play them on emulators though with fan patches and the gameplay is pretty terrible tbh

SMT I and II have pretty basic plots, bad gameplay but decently memorable characters. Nocturne was an improvement in every way possible, great story, i like the characters, gameplay is better, can't knock the press turn system, but for some reason i just dont like playing it

I won't say I hate mainline, I like the mainline but I'd say its mostly from a story or aesthetics sense, in comparison I think the spinoffs really do eclipse it for characters, story, or gameplay.

this is some site thats basically MAL but for games

Tbh I feel persona users are the weakest of all SMT Heroes. For example, the mainline heroes tend to have the capabilities of a demon, as well the ability to summon up to 3 demons at once. Not to mention that Nanashi's demons will continue fighting even if he's knocked out, so they're pretty well organized as well.

and you can beat him it usually just
involves cheap tactics and the battle can take up to an hour so

Yeah, Demi-Fiend is usually thought to be the strongest of all SMT protags. Most likely because unlike most protags who rely on a comp or phone to summon demons, Demi-Fiend can summon them on his own.
So basically, if you take away a summoner's comp, they're fucked, as it is also what gives them their superhuman abilities, but... You can't take the from Demi-fiend, or Nanashi for that fact

I think in the case of Persona it's excusable from a story perspective. It's annoying from a gameplay perspective but if they justify it I'm usually okay with it.

In 3 protag had part of death sealed in him right, i could imagine if you died for even a moment it could be... problematic
and in both 4 and 5 technically the protags are involved in a weird metagame, so even if they died, again, even for a second, they might be deemed a failure by the game-master

There's another RPG I love called Okage that also Game Overs if the protagonist dies
theres an excuse here too that does make sense
most of the plot revolves around the fact that the protag is possessed by a phantom, and you dropping for even a moment could spell the end for this phantom since the protag is the only capable host for it
