JRPG's with good gameplay and story?
I'm looking for a new game that will have a story I can be invested in and characters I can care about, any suggestions?
Lets see, what systems do you have? Because knowing your options will help us locate a good choice for you. Also for gameplay do you prefer turn-based or non-turn-based?
Bravely Default, Kingdom Hearts, Grandia, Tales of (Berseria,Abyss,Xillia,Symphonia)
Etrian Odysee, Fantasy Life, ...
I just named some I played besides smt and FF.
I have a PC and current gen consoles. Feel free to give me any recommendation.
Danganronpa
@Aki-Joker Thank you, I'll look into the ones that I didn't play yet!
Tales of Graces, it was personally my favorite Tales game, so figured it was worth mentioning. All the Tales games I've tried are worth a play, but Graces had the easiest to learn and most well-done combat system which made it so much easier to work with
@TheWorld I was looking into those games but was one the fence about it. I guess I should jump into the series then, thanks!

@Bgammax Interesting, I'll give it a look.
In Tales Games I am torn between Abyss, Symphonia and Berseria.
But Vesperia had also a great cast.
unfortunately I never got to play Vesperia due to only using Sony systems. I was very interested in it. My main issue with Symphonia is that there was no 3D movement, which basically means you have to be a naturally mobile character to fight effectively.
I've actually played through Symphonia and I loved it, so I was going to get Bersaria since it's the new one.
I've been saying this to anyone who asks for it lately, and I'll keep doing so until someone actually plays it:

play Suikoden. They're old, but not out-dated. In fact, for back in the days, these games probably were pretty impressive. They boast 108 playable characters, whom you have to recruit one by one through out the game. Your main character generally ends up being the leader of an army through some twist of fate and you have to build that army.

The combat itself is really solid too. it revolves around "runes" you can equip to learn magic or skills. These runes are also pretty story relevant as there are 21 "true" runes.

I'm not going to go into too much detail, but you should definitly play it. It's one of those really REALLY good yet underrated series. They originally came out on ps1, though you should be able to play it on the psvita as well as ps 3. There's also Suikoden Tierkreis on the ds iirc.
For some reason I don't usually like to play old games, like Suikoden, but reading that description kind of sold me on it.
neato. The pixel art is pretty well done too so it won't be disgusting to look at. it looks just as good as any snes FF game. Except a bit better.
Digital Devil Saga fam
suikoden is one of my favorite series!! it's really, really, really good!!
FF series might be good for you, Kingdom Hearts series is between Square enix and disney crossover it is popular with it's story, and even gameplay, i suggest you to play the flowing games

(Kingdom hearts Final mix => Kingdom hearts chain of memories => Kingdom hearts 2 final mix => Kingdom hearts 358/2 days ((you can watch it's movie too)) => kingdom hearts Birth by sleep final mix => kingdom hearts Re;coded ((i don't suggest to play the game, but watch the movie, it is a filler but with an important scene that contain every game even for kingdom hearts 2 ending, it's really important)) ) these games are on Kingdom hearts 1.5+2,5 on ps4 => now we can go to 2.8: kingdom hearts Dream Drop distance HD => Kingdom hearts 0.2 => before playing kingdom hearts x back cover you must watch kingdom hearts x on youtube faster or play the 500 massions in kingdom hearts union x then watch the remaining cutscenes ((i don't suggest you to play mobile game because it's slow and waste of money to buy stronger medals)) so you can play x back cover, and you can wait for kingdom hearts 3 to come out

((what i mean in Final mix that there are additional story cutscences that you must see there with the hardest bosses there, good luck with KH2 secret boss because it is important too))

i feel like that was a not understandable explanation here...
missions*
Danganronpa, Gravity Rush, if you haven't played P4 or P3, I'd recommend them as well.
I've played Gravity Rush as well as the previous Personas. I've also bought the KH final mix nonsense on PS4 that came out a few months back in preparation for KH#.
I mainly wanted some suggestions on less known series, but I suppose the best would be popular haha.
Also just bought the bundle for all 3 Danganronpa games on steam >.>
Nice, I hope you have fun!

Keep in mind that Byakuya is best grill lel

And this isn't a JRPG but if you want to play a nice game that you can sit back and relax, I'd recommend Stardew Valley, it's one of my favorite games for just chilling out.
Alright I'll have to see for myself, but I'll keep that in mind lol.
Yea I know about Stardew Valley it seems comfy.
Yeah I'm gonna echo the talk about Tales of Symphonia. The gameplay is a bit dated if you've played any Tales game since Abyss (the battles are locked in a 2D field instead of 3D) but still solid. And it honestly is one of the best written games IMO, period.

Also if you like turn based gameplay and lots of JRPG cliches, (and have a Dreamcast, Gamecube, or Wii) give Skies of Arcadia a try. Best way I'd describe it is Anti-Final Fantasy 7, with Pirates.
DR isn't even a JRPG wyd

Play Wild Arms 3 or we can't be friends
My my, I remember Wild Arms.
DR might not be a JRPG but I hear it has what I ask for, a good story with characters I can care about.
Fujisaki best Dangnanronpa waifu.
Always been a sucker for Final Fantasy 1 and 10. Oh, and Valkyrie Chronicles is a forgotten masterpiece.
Really good game on IOS android and ds which is playable on 3ds (is that current gen?) is The World Ends With You. not a single person I know that played it hasn't had their life changed.
Xenoblade Chronicles fammo. Hours of gameplay and lots of sidequests
Tales of Berseria is pretty good, it also has a nihilist meme girl so that's cool. Also Sengoku Rance is GOOD.
Chrono Trigger? I've heard that it's short but the multiple endings and sidequests that help the story drags you in.
