Name: Owen Occupation: High School Student Find me as @LEGOdawg2001 on Twitter Absolutely massive geek/otaku. Lover of all JRPGs with a preference towards the Xeno series, the Mother series, and the Shin Megami Tensei/Persona series (hence why I'm here). I also love To the Moon and Ace Attorney. Lover of religions and philosophy, research of higher questions is always my priority. Ask me questions about symbolism and interpretation if you wish. Icon by Kazami

Persona (and greater Megaten) Symbolism and Philosophy
So I don't think a topic has been created to seriously focus on this, and if it has been, it was a LONG time ago, so may as well bring this up. The reason why I got into the Persona series in the first place is not for the fun anime style and JRPG gameplay (though I still enjoy those parts) but the greater symbolism and philosophy that inspired the games. For those unaware, the series draws heavily from the work of Carl Jung, a psychoanalyst who was one of the first major thinkers to break off from the work of Freud. So much of the game draws on these ideas, and I find it absolutely fascinating. But there are of course other ideas in the series as well, such as the heavy presence of Gnosticism in Persona 5, and the work of Descartes's famous "Cogito, ergo sum" or "I think, therefore I am" I'd like to dedicate this thread to discussion about these deeper inspirations and meanings, as well as any personal interpretations of certain topics you find particularly powerful. I know I'll be putting stuff here as I go through the games myself (I've only been into the series since April, and I've only experienced P3 and P5 so far) so if anything this will be fun for me to look back on. And this isn't just limited to Persona either. If you have interesting points you'd like to bring up on the greater Megami Tensei series as a whole, please do so! Feel free to ask questions about interpretation or things you would like greater clarity on. To the best of my abilities, I (and maybe others as well) will offer my perspective on it. The last thing I have to say is please tag all spoilers regarding any game, whether it be Persona, Megaten, whatever. Its jerkish, and since I myself am going through the games, I'd like to remain as blind as possible. Ok lets get started!
The collective unconsious
Well first of all, Morgana specifically mentions MEMENTOS as the Collective Unconscious. Palaces are more individual to that specific person's cognition, while Mementos is everyone's palace. In Jung's work, the Collective Unconscious is where all humans draw their root symbols and meanings from, and they bring it to their personal unconscious. The only way the Phantom Thieves can affect the Collective is by affecting EVERYONE, which they do, as each of their acts brings more awareness to the population of the world, and expands the scope of what the Phantom Thieves can explore in the Collective Unconscious. To put it simply, palaces are more influenced by their owners, so the Phan Thieves would have to affect the owner's cognition, but in Mementos, they have to affect EVERYONE'S cognition
best sick tunes??
"Fate is in our hands" from the Persona 3 Movies. Freaking love that song. Also all renditions of Burn My Dread, I love "Maze of Life" and "Road Less Taken" from the Q subseries, Life will Change and Swear to my Bones are other persona-l favorites of mine as well
(edited by LEGOdawg2001)

Psychic Investigation
Oh yes. I specialize in gravitational pulls, bending space to my will. It's not omnipotent, but its why I'm here

You'll never see it coming
The best PQ2 character trailer
I was super excited to see it was Akechi's time to shine. Was also excited when Minato and Futaba's trailers were available when those came out. I just hope to see a side to Akechi we haven't seen yet in Q2. He's my second favorite character in P5, and I just want to see more from him

Memory Test: You Can (Not) Memorize
Presumably you were going to give us a prompt for us to memorize. However this is a clearly flawed system. I entreat you to remember what you want us to remember, and remember not to mis-remember any memorable detail, otherwise we wil remember what we are supposed to remember in a way that is not remembering. Remember
Persona (and greater Megaten) Symbolism and Philosophy
Oh and if you desire an intro to Jungian Psychoanalysis, here's a GREAT introduction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4a4EdAES0fk I also have made a PowerPoint going much deeper into these, and I can send it to you over PM's if you wish
Psychic Investigation
yawns and gets up. Puts on glasses "Honestly its boring here. This should be fun. The name's Gnosis Shone. Nice to meet ya" Gnosis Shone, 2nd Year Delinquent Genius A - Rank Psychic Power: Gravity Can force an object within a 9ftx9ftx9ft space to be affected by gravity. Either crushed to oblivion or sudo flight. Or somewhere between those extremes. Requires incredible focus, and often works best in calmer situations. Can only focus on one object at a time, can be applied to self.
(edited by LEGOdawg2001)
