Help an SMT pleb out
I'm almost done with P5, and I wanna get into the rest of the Shin Megami Tensei series. Any recommendations on what to start with?
go in reverse? i don't think it really matters what order you play it in.
Most of the mechanics for SMT have remained the same, unlike Persona. The only real change is what advantage you get for exploiting enemy weaknesses and a few minor mechanics.
It's a tad bit dated, but it's still a useful guide that was made over at /smtg/.

play persona 6 next. it's great
Clearly after Persona 5, the most logical choice for your next game is Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei
Nocturne

At least it gives you more money than IV.
I'm not new to Persona, but i'm new to SMT. play persona 3:FES (this is a better, improved version of the original, or play portable for the chance to play a girl and get a male harem :^) ) next, then 4. then play the persona 2 duology (in order- innocent sin, then eternal punishment) play persona: revelations (the first one). if you really like persona, play the arena spin-offs (i dont really recommend them, or Dancing all night. bleh.) I haven't played persona Q, but i heard the battle system is good in that one.

as for SMT, people say to play SMT IV first. i'm going to buy nocturne and digital devil saga soon, to which there is a sequel. then devil summoner, which also has a sequel... there's also devil survivor (so many demons). also has a sequel. i think those are all the notable SMT series. if you have any more questions ask me kek
also for persona 4 there is a Golden re-release, i haven't played it (i don't have a vita ):) everyone says it's better but marie is a trash character
@Lewd

They forced Marie as a lover so hard on the animation it makes me sick.
Devil Survivor is a good start point if you like SRPGs. I'm not the biggest fan of them, but I love Devil Survivor. Besides that, SMT 4 or the Soul Hackers 3DS port/remake are probably safe titles to start with.
@IamThou they forced marie so much overall it makes me want to die. i love me some tsunderes, but she is SO forced it's just awful.
Marie isn't that bad.
do not play Revelations Persona, play Shin Megami Tensei Persona
js theres a difference and Revelations Persona is basically a trash can

as for mainline SMT games uh
eh
as for other spinoffs Digital Devil Saga has the best story of the franchise imo but you need to buy two games to experience it
also as for Persona 4 the original version is king because Golden tweaked the gameplay but they added Marie and ruined everything
Seriously I love Digital Devil Saga but I will warn you now, if you play it, you will want to buy BOTH games in advance, because DDS1 ends on the worst fucking cliffhanger imaginable. DDS1 does not have a satisfying conclusion by itself.
@Hibiki Golden is way better than 4 and Marie seriously isn't that bad.
See, Satan is advocating for Marie, that's how you know she's bad.
Ohoho, is this a thread that calls for SMT elitism? I think it is. [ahem]

So, after P5, you have a few options. If you really want to slowly ease into mainline SMT, play Persona 3. It has clunkier gameplay than P5 for sure, but the story's tone is closer to mainline SMT with how depressing it can get. I'd recommend Portable for the sake of not wanting to kill yourself due to the lackluster party AI.

If you think you can handle it, your best options are either DDS or Nocturne. SMTIV is also a great place to start, but the battles can be so quick that it can severely overwhelm the unprepared. Also, it takes a few hours for the story to go anywhere, unlike the other two I mentioned.
marie is trash
@hazama
Naraku's pretty brutal.
hopping on the anti-marie train!!
I really only did Marie's SLink for the epilogue.

I never really used this, but I have played all english-translated megaten games. As a starting point, I suggest Nocturne or Devil Survivor. Original Devil Survivor was my first SMT game, and the choices it gave you as a player was what made me love the series, but there's no reason to play the original, go with Overclocked. Nocturne's choices, or Reasons, were all evenly bad, but at least they gave you choices. If choices turn you off and you're looking for a more traditional RPG with set party members and a linear storyline, go for DDS. The story is pretty wonderful and the soundtrack is probably Shoji Meguro's work. In SMT1
