Ideas,Hints And Help For New Roleplayers
I doubt this thread is going to get much attention or last long but as a new roleplayer I wanted to ask a couple questions about rp here.
Not in the best state of mind right now but I might be able to answer any question you might have. Wether it be now or later depends on the question though.
Ask away. We got a whole discord that'll pop in and help. Maybe. On both counts.
Well okay.I'm not helping my chances with this thread like this but i'll only ask a little bit before I go to bed because where I live it's almost midnight, not to mention that I have school and work to do till 4:30 in the afternoon. So if you have better things to do the leave and come back around then.
(edited by Eito)
I've said most of my main things back in the other thread, but feel free to ask away. I'll be writing an essay in the meantime, so my responses may be delayed slightly.
My advice is...Be careful of how you do things and Don't good mod everywhere.
Other advise. Ask before joining you don't know if an RP With be closed off or Not
So,to start:Characters. Any particularly important people to know? Any rules about characters and how to build them?
Take what I do for example. I'm being Dante from the Devil may cry games. Other people got accounts not related to persona so note that.
However, asking before joining usually isn't necessary. You can usually read the context and know how exclusive it is, but if you feel there might be exclusiveness, feel free to ask. But for the most part, rp is rather open to everyone.
So,to start:Characters. Any particularly important people to know? Any rules about characters and how to build them? Rules? What are those? But in all seriousness, go wild. Try to make your character have both strengths and flaws, as all characters should have. But you seem to be on the right track. And Agent is right in the sense that not all accounts are Persona-related. This alt of mine is from Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, while my main account, Cait_Sith, is a SMT/Persona account. As for important characters you should know... you'll probably come across them at one point or another.

Remember, everyone starts somewhere, even the great ones started somewhere. It will get better over time but I recommend proofreading your posts for errors.

1. There are several prominent role players, but none of them are like, vitally important to role playing 2. There are fewer character building rules than you think. General rule is simply to be reasonable, if it seems like too much it probably is. Most people are already at -Dyne level skill wise so several people rely more on description for effectiveness rather than attack strength like in the games.
But I do got like 2 persona related accounts Which I rarely use I alternate between them
A character genuinely has some sort of balance. It's hard to tell what exactly most people consider balanced or not though especially in rp. There's a stark difference in narrative rp and number-based rp and most gms on this site don't really have a good balance between (the main exception being Cait's threads). For narrative as long as power and abilities have some consequence that is realistic such as a faster drain of energy or something along those lines it's fine. For a pure number system it's a bit more complicated though. You need a more stern drawback that actually would affect number based mechanics such as many weaknesses or a very low stats or two. If your asking more specifically about writing advice I could provide a better answer but perhaps at a latter time as I would get a little in-depth with that and I doubt I could be as detailed at the moment.
So,to start:Characters. Any particularly important people to know? Any rules about characters and how to build them? We're honestly pretty free-form. Anyone important varies based on what you're doing. And honestly there's no hard and fast rule on how to make a character. Heck we've got them all. Persona-users, OCs, Kamen Riders, Keyblade wielders, whatever the heck Tatsuya is, Mirage Masters, Demon Summoners, apparently some Fire Emblem people.... Main thing is accept that you can lose, and accept that others will be on the same power level as you. Oh, and don't go finding random things in the garbage. And warping makes some people go REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Well,i'm usually pretty anal about grammar,so that's not a problem. What about this character?Less swearing actually give him the ability to fight? What do you guys think?
Being able to fight would be beneficial, but is not necessary. As for swearing, I personally have no issue with it, and haven’t noticed you doing it much.
Well,i'm usually pretty anal about grammar,so that's not a problem. What about this character?Less swearing actually give him the ability to fight? What do you guys think? What do you mean? As in, the cleaner he is, the stronger he gets?
Well,i'm usually pretty anal about grammar,so that's not a problem. What about this character?Less swearing actually give him the ability to fight? What do you guys think? Swearing isn't really an issue. Actually, it gives a little more personality and charm to the character, in my opinion. But I digress. He could develop the ability to fight over time. Having Physical resistance is rather acceptable, although you might want to make him not as weak to magic. Perhaps just give him low magic resistance, or weakness to just one or two elements? That's probably better than being weak to all forms of magic.
We do a fairly high amount of fighting here. So yeah you may want to not be fatally weak to everything but physical. Honestly a lot of the "casual" or non-fighting stuff tends to be in spurts. Though it seems to be making a bit of a comeback thanks to.... some occurances...

As in, the cleaner he is, the stronger he gets? Well then.I say that i'm careful with grammar then do this. What I mean is:I sorta didn't know how combat and stuff like that worked so I intentionally made the biggest wimp I could so I didn't have to fight.Should I change it up?Make him stronger?

There's nothing wrong with that. This catto I have here is literally a smol kitten. You may get some abilities later on, but as I said, there's nothing wrong with having an ordinary person. Heck, that leaves room for some interesting stuff to happen.
Being ordinary can sometimes result in parasite infection that gives you edgey powers.
Being ordinary can sometimes result in parasite infection that gives you edgey powers. Yes,I noticed your whole thing and to be honest I really liked the way you played it out.
Honestly, the best advice I can give is to go with what you want most out of your character. Rather you go with the flow, or have a strategy planned, it's all up to you in the end. Plenty of people will help if you wish though.

There’s a tradition we have here of what’s called “GYM threads”. In these threads people pretty much just have 1v1s for combat practice purposes. If you would like I can link you to a few of them so you can read over and get somewhat of a feel for how it usually works. There is also a series of recent threads that have been full-on narrative I could show as well. Finally, you seem to be 9 hours ahead of me, so I could try to get a GYM thread open around the time you get on tomorrow, if you do, and you can watch it happen.

Well,on making this guy not as pitiful, what do you guys suggest?Make him have an "awakening" or something and give him powers?Just load him up with modern practical weapons?Retcon his "normality" and just act like he had magic or whatever from the start?Keep him as he is and make another account with a different character?I want your opinions my senpais.
Gaining power isn't something you have to do instantaneously. It can aid in developing the character to build up to an awakening. A lot of character development can occur just from the character feeling useless in their ability to fight back.
Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking.I don't want to be cringy and try to play "struggling underdog protagonist that randomly gains power and becomes relevant."You know?
I’ll have the GYM threads in the morning for you. It’s rather difficult to compile GYMs as there’s no one person who makes them, but for now, here’s “Yomi-No-Kuni”. There’s more plot around it, but this is the most solidly Persona-based one recently and it uses narrative exclusively. Also this is in reverse order. Sorry about that. https://phansite.net/forum/topic.php?topic=12518#post427978 https://phansite.net/forum/topic.php?topic=12448 https://phansite.net/forum/topic.php?topic=12380 As for powering up your character, easiest way is probably retconning so he always had it, but it might be interesting to write him building up to an Awakening. It’s personal preference really. Oh and uh, yeah these threads get pretty long, so might be best to wait until you have quite some time if you’re going to read the whole thing. Or just skim it for the idea.

Underdog stories aren't overused on site strangely enough. So far it's me and Kalib but more often than not people start with abilities so I heavily encourage building up to it especially if you can do so for a unique reason.
I feel the need to chime in since Mig said my name. Jokes aside, what Quin said we barely have any underdogs honestly. On the topic of modern weapons, I kinda run a store for those now I guess, so if you wanted to go that road it's an option. But most people who use em mix magic in there too. I'm among the biggest examples of that? Awakenings are fun though, there's a few ways to do those bastards. If you want the easy way find someone who would be willing to run a Shadow give them an idea of your character's issues and then jump into the TV. Beyond that, Metaverse style is an option I guess, but it's murky and hard to do well. Or you could pull something akin to P2 and just have one... But not actually be aware of that fact, that method is rarely used though I believe one person is doing it. Or P3, but uh we don't run Dark Hour or anything lately so I'd be curious to see that pulled off. Or there's non Persona floating around, could always stumble upon a Kamen Rider Belt or a Keyblade? But who knows, my best advice... Is really just to have fun with it. That's the most important part of this madness in the end.
Well i'm not gonna be responding for a while due to school and additional work. Also soryy for not saying goodbye before but my internet cut out and I had to go to bed.

Are you trying to tell me I don't count as an underdog in this place Tatsuya?

(edited by Eito)
Ho boy, I can sum up the basics of 3 and 4 for you. 3 is super simple, just wander into the Dark Hour like they do in the game and find another Persona user, the real trick there is actually finding someone running a dark hour thread around here. We uh, had a run of bad ones for a while and nobody's done anything with it since. 4, on the other hand, is fun, to put it simply you go inside a TV and in that other world a shadow akin to Palace targets is born, the difference being they're made from repressed emotions rather than distorted desires. The trick with those bastards is accepting what one hates about their self. Also, if you couldn't tell I'm still Tatsuya. Just too lazy to get off this alt at the moment.
Well, you’re in good company then. I’ve never actually played a single Persona game before. Though I did watch a play through of P5. If I remember correctly P3 and P4 are rather similar in that the character must face their shadow, a reflection of their inner self, most commonly what they’re ashamed of, and come to accept it as part of them in order to gain a Persona. Or you could high-five Izanami like Yu did. But for the most part it’s the shadow thing and that usually features a boss fight.
[quote=Kamen-Rider-Snipe Also, if you couldn't tell I'm still Tatsuya. Just too lazy to get off this alt at the moment. Yeah,I noticed.Currently seeing if I could join the new thread late.
Well,I fucked that up.
Did you want a link to the RP Hub Discord? I see it was mentioned like once. I'd be more than happy to grab it for ya if Discord is a thing you have. Also you may have been late to that party, but trust me, things are only just beginning.
Sorry,don't have discord.
Important rule: Avoid corbin's cringe rp
Hmph. A bit rude, no?
Important rule: Avoid corbin's cringe rp Eh.*Shrug* Hmph. A bit rude, no? From what i've seen, being kinda rude is just his thing.

Hmph. A bit rude, no? Rude is my middle name
Like how everyone said, try to go with what you're comfortable with and build your own writing style with the way you feel the best. One thing i do before beginning to write a paragraph is thinking about what kind of emotion my character feels and what the outcome with other ones will be. I don't even know if i should be the one to talk tbh since i've been doing casual stuff and rarely something really serious.
Well then. Time for a few more questions before the thread dies. What about starting RP threads? Rules for that? Preferences? Locations? Plot?
Starting RP threads is just as simple as starting this one, save instead of asking something at the beginning, you’ll want to describe the situation a bit to see if anyone comes up. In general the more descriptive it is the better, but there aren’t really any rules. Guess that answers preference too. Location can be pretty much anywhere you can think of. Odds are someone will come along at some point. As for plot, well, those kinda pop up at inconsistent times. Usually it’s pretty easy to tell early on in the thread if there’s gonna be a plot around it or not, the time will often make it fairly obvious
This isn't really grand RP advice, I think most of what I wanted to say has been said, but a suggestion about threads. If it's something more casual I think anytime will do, though afternoons are best. If you wanna kickstart an actual plot, the best time to probably do so would be weekends in afternoons to evenings, I believe that's when you'd get the best crowd. Only problem is the potential of another plot continuing around the same time and having multiple threads fight for attention, but that's something that's just hard to help, especially if you have no Discord. Just my thoughts though, if someone else wants to put there input on that, go ahead. It's probably not what you were asking for, but I hope it's helpful a bit.
He’s 9 hours ahead of i us Hib, or maybe 8 for you. Point being there’s a massive timezone difference you might wanna account for.
Ugh, timezones. Admittedly I didn't pay enough attention to see any mention of time. R.I.P. So many of us are nearby I just kind of assumed.
He’s 9 hours ahead of i us Hib, or maybe 8 for you. Point being there’s a massive timezone difference you might wanna account for. Yeah.I assume you guys are mostly american? Cus i'm european. Then again, when it comes to weekends I guess I could just look up the time difference online set the threads up at the appropriate time for you since i'm an anti-social nerd that has nothing to do for the entirety of the weekend.
(edited by Eito)
Yeah, a lot of us are American, both Tatsuya and I are in CST, Yu is in PST, I think Hibiki is in EST, but we tend to make bad life decisions with thread timing (read: starting at 10PM) so on most days we’re active early morning for you.
I can't do earlier than 6:00 in the morning on weekends only. Any earlier and before I know it my persona will be the Grinch with how grumpy i'll be all the time.
After that i'm (mostly) good though.
I know you said you don't have Discord but usually a great way to tell if a thread is there for plot is to be on the two RP Discords (Unofficial RP Hub and Nexus Historia) since a sizable chunk of plot originates from those two. Sometimes plot comes from PMs, I think?
Grinch Persona!? N-Nani!? This is unexpected! Oh ho ho!
I dunno.Haven't really gotten a chance to do something about getting Discord. I'll check it out but don't get your hopes up.
I'm European too, i currenlty am out of my country that's why i have this timezone rn. So if i were to make a thread while i'm home i would either go for late afternoon/evening (6 PM to max 8,30 PM) to give me some time to actually do something before sleeping. i once made one at early morning to joke with a friend, but it took an unexpected turn. I don't really talk about this so much but if you wanna know look for he Sony account.
Fuck.Just missed the GYM thread.
Ayyyy this thread still lives and so do I. After gaining a bit of experience with both Combat and Non-Combat RP I decided that this thread is no longer (as) usefull. So I decided to convert it to simple discussion about RP. That is,if i'm not the only one here. Which I probably am.
Hey guys, I'm a new person too. Question: Do accounts that aren't Persona-related have the right to play as actual characters from Persona?
You absolutely can
Leo
It's me, Addalme, this is my alt account, there is also a hunter (from bloodbone) and from other games.
Absolutely! There's quite a few non-Persona characters, from mainline SMT to things that aren't even from Atlus. And another thing to note: you don't necessarily have to go the typical rp route. You can certainly make your own thing, like a certain rp I made months ago where you literally play yourself as a phantom thief.
I believe the question was related to name. Their handle is NaturePixii and not Ann. So they seemed to have concerns over being unable to RP as Ann. Which isn't an issue! In fact we need an Ann around these parts. Welcome.
(edited by Ryoma_Sakamichi)
I RP'd a couple of times as Bane from Batman and also RP as a character in Fallout 4 so feel free to use whoever you want. Also to mention, the only thing you just need to worry about is no God Moding or Asspull when doing RP.
Yeah we had that happen alot as emactook said like "Asspulls"
Boop you can indeed :3
I haven't really found that to be an issue, except with a few select users. But still, don't worry about making a few mistakes. That's just part of the learning experience, and the point is to have fun :3

"Take chances! Get messy! And make mistakes!" - Ms. Frizzle
It ended a few months ago, sadly, although I can certainly dig up the link if you just wanna view it for ideas or fun!
Trust me when I say I have a colorful Record on the site THAT GOES TO ANYONE SEEING THIS AND IS NEW HERE
Colorful is one way to put it.
You got no clue @Ryoma_Sakamichi
Sure! https://phansite.net/forum/topic.php?topic=8028 Here you go, my friend! A bit of background on this: some people in PMs were joking about a fighting game with Phansite users fighting the P5 cast, and the idea grew from there.
