A Corner of Thoughts: The will of Rebellion
Metaverse outfits, Thief outfits, whatever you want to call them, they are the will of the characters rebellion. But... rebellion from what exactly? What exactly are these outfits intended for? I've seen many RPers use them, but in rather strange ways. It makes me wonder if they understand what they are supposed to mean, and simply choose to go with it because it's a neat idea. Which I can't blame you for, but here I am to ramble about stuff anyway! The outfits materialize on the user once the will of their rebellion is materialized, as we know. The outfit is part of the Metaverse shenanigans to 'mark' someone as an intruder, as someone rebelling against the Palace Ruler. The outfits themselves are meant to reflect what the wearer views as a 'Rebel'. For Joker there is the obvious gentleman thief, for Mona, a bandit, Skull is a biker/thug, and so forth. There's another interesting point I could bring up, but will redact it for spoilers, for now. I bring this up because I often see moments where these metaverse outfits spawn in RP, and it confuses me. How is that viewed as a Rebel? What are they 'rebelling' against to cause it to spawn? The most obvious, how is it spawning outside of the Metaverse?
So the readers, I pose a few discussion questions. What would your thief outfit be, IC and/or OOC? Why would you or this character view this as a 'rebel'? Have you learned something from this? The game isn't exactly clear about some things, so if I cleared some things up I'm happy to help. Feel free to discuss these things, and how you might be able to improve this stuff. Please do not use this as some attempt to cause argument. This is meant to be a discussion. At the end of the day, I cannot make you do something, however despite my joking nature, I only wish to see others improve, and if I can help someone improve their writing, even in such small detail, that would be great. A little thought can go a long way sometimes. I've been considering doing stuff like this for a while, and this is where I'm beginning. If this thread gets decent discussion, I'll gladly continue these kinds of posts in the future.
For Gamma, his metaverse outfit is that of the Phantom, from Phantom of the Opera. Its his favorite movie, and he views the Phantom as rebelling against the lonesome fate he was born with. The Phantom was scarred at a young age and beaten and mocked for it, so he turned away from the world and worked on his music. Eventually meeting the protagonist Christine and falling in love, all the while using her to share his creativity with the world.
Using an alt currently, it's actually bona. IC bona has his ninja thief outfit. He feels like society rejects him being a nerd, as he love being a thief in RPG games. So, as a ninja, he has much sneakiness. IRL me is similar, but I wouldn't be really sure.
Gypsy, her mask is dark purple and has a golden veil covering the bottom of her face. She wears a thigh length dress, dark colored leggings that have spirals of golden thread on it, flat heeled boots, yellow gloves, and has a dark cape connected to the collar of her dress. She was tricked by many who took her kindness for granted which lead to her getting revenge on the cognitions of those who had hurt her.
In Sayaka's case, her rebel is "Demon". A demonic persona based on western Satanism and what she views as demonic, ie, a red, scaly armor, body painted to look as menacing and terrifying as possible (Extra eyes, teeth etc). In her life she was demonized for being weird in various ways, as well as being seen as a future evildoer for her brothers actions. As a demon however, she's embracing all of that negativity and becoming the monster they see her as, using the mask as power. Much like Chaos against Law or Satan against Heaven, the demon seeks to destroy order and rebel against society in the name of chaos and freedom. I've only used this form in Mementos or palaces though. No need to use a thief outfit outside of these conditions I feel, but each to their own
Here I am, the self-insert/OC with no metaverse outfit. Such a sad existance I lead. I'm not really sure what I view as "rebellious" when it comes to me as an actual person though. Not many rebellious types I really admire or have a leaning towards as far as I know myself. Neutral to a fault I guess. If anythng, I'd likely be clothed in something that looked like it came fresh out of an anime or akin to a more subdued super hero costume (Think Black Panther, Punisher, Symbiote Spider-Man, etc...) since my eyes are more drawn to works of fiction like these.
(Dang banned words made me post this in two parts.) I'd likely not be able to awaken in the Metaverse realistically speaking. I'd be more prone to a method from P1-3. P4 doesn't count since everyone can theoretically awaken there by accepting their shadow. Delta the character doesn't have anything to really rebel against either, hence why I never gave him one. Although if I were, he'd likely be dressed like an escaped prisoner, broken sh-ackles and the like along with the classic black and white stripes. Maybe even have a (probably pretty weightless) ball and chain attached to one or both of his legs too. Idk really.
Don't forget this is a discussion. Not a talk to the wall session. If you wanna comment on others posts, do so! Criticism is important, just be respectful. @Geno: While I can understand how that could be perceived as a rebel, your connect to the thief RPG stuff seems like a stretch to me. @Gypsy: Quite the fancy design, though I'm a bit confused on the connection to rebellion here. @AdachiImouto: I agree on this last part, honestly. I never understood why I sometimes see people have their outfits in the Dark Hour or non-Metaverse dungeons. Since there is no ruler, nothing to Rebel against, there would be no reason for it to appear, rather strange but eh?
Gypsies were woman who are sometimes described to be traveling thieves. Con people with fake fortunes, dancing for money, seducing while stealing, and would leave before getting caught

Well, IC bona kinda wanted to fit in with society. But everyone rejected him except for a few people. You know, because he was a nerd. People just kinda pushed him away, making him do some random things for attention. Again, like I said, his favorite class in RPGs are the ninja/theif classes. (which, by the way, are IRL me's fave classes too 'u') So I felt it fit for him to have a ninja themed thief outfit.

Still bona, BTW. Whoops.
@Gypsy How does that relate to your character though? Do they come from a Gypsy background? Have a figure they looked up to that had Gypsy traits? Admire a Gypsy from a work of fiction? I think the Gypsy influence is very cool for a costume, but I'm wondering how your character relates to it.

When I consider the word "Rebellion" I think of it in a more general kind of way instead of instantly going to the intrinsic. What I mean is that rebellion to me is often going against a higher power or authority such as the government or maybe the law itself. After all the truly rebellious people in history tend to be those that challenge the norms already set by their ancestors. Now when I think of intrinsic rebellion or self-revolution I think of it as going against your base instinct. Looking your worst or lacking qualities in the face and making the active choice to surpass them in order to complete a greater goal. Admittedly my take on this may sound a bit romantic since I am a sucker for internal conflicts, but I feel that it can be applied to real life too. While difficult I truly believe that people can rebel against the nature given to them by a variety of sources even if it takes added effort. Now as for Ene her metaverse outfit wouldn't be too dramatic due to her lack of experience with the world. Illness and later isolation prevented her from really going out there and living so an act of rebellion would be pretty simple. Just the ability to freely choose what she wants to do for the day or being able to surpass her anxiety to hang out with a group of people would be rebellion enough. So her outfit would most likely just be travelers clothes combined with a bright red scarf after a certain person she knew before. To Ene a fall jacket, a simple pair of jeans, and a bright red scarf would be the perfect outfit of a "Hero". Boring I know, but her idea of rebellion really wouldn't be anything extravagant due to her personal experiences.
I do not usually speak OOC much but I would like to add my two cents. Though it is highly doubtful Saeko will ever have reason to have one, if she did, Saeko's Metaverse outfit would resemble a sort of generic or stereotypical desert thief. She comes from a desert world as I explained before, and is from the military, with a strong sense of justice. She would see those who hide in the desert to take advantage of the weak as rebels, as scum, perhaps. It would pose an interesting contrast as well, between her characterization as more of a Law leaning character, for her to suddenly bear the appearance of a criminal.
@Delta, her fighting style is similar to that of dance. As part of her revenge she stole money from those she targeted, she would also target perverted men and gang members in the red light district. Robbing them clean and gaining information, she would seduce then drug her victims so they wouldn't remember anything. She rebelled against people who would pick on the weak, poor and would abuse women.
@Gypsy: I think I understand now. Sorry, your explanation of the connection makes enough reasonable sense, but it was a bit difficult to connect your points since you kinda split them up and didn't explain well enough, in my opinion. Not sure if I worded that well enough, but y'know.
Hehe... I kinda messed up with my Metaverse outfit IC as it has more symbolism than actual rebellion, for a description its a ruined blue suit with a mask that had 2 curved horns at the ends, however one of the horns are cracked off and even the mask is in poor shape, I imagined it as more of a fall from grace kind of attire and based it upon pain more than rebellion I'm sure I'll get better at character creation eventually! As for my ooc outfit I don't know enough about myself really,
@Aitome_Korichi: Actually, you could in a way connect that to Rebellion. The cracked horns could bring to mind Demons, Devils, perhaps? The Fall from Grave symbolism and horns could be connected to one of the most famous examples of rebellion, Lucifer.
Well my character doesn't really have a thief outfit, instead still in his regular outfit, when he enters the metaverse. For rebellion, he has yet to see anything he does as rebelling because he doesn't see anyone as a controlling presence over him, so he has no real reason for a thief outfit. Rather he sees himself as stuck, helping those around him because of feeling forced to by his history, because of his upbringing and his personality, caring too much even though he wish he could mind his own business. Maybe I'll give him a set if his mindset changes, whether through force or circumstance. As for me, I simply don't have too much of a rebellious spirit, and even one of my friends says that I don't have any rebellion in me and it's not healthy. If I see something wrong, I'll call someone out on it, but as for me right now? I'm not a rebel. And I don't really have an outfit in mind for myself. Probably a trench coat cause trench coats are awesome.
Mmm, my character just isn't that deep, I was more concerned on the symbolism of pain being a major component, Inb4 Aincrad is a school shooter in disguise
No, Aincrads fine. I, the person behind the screen am the school shooter, if only because I love trench coats. They are too damn comfy. And good for hiding shit.
IC Aki has already her rebell as jester but for myself I would say a more Rock Punk outfit, because I would rebell against most of mainstream music and stuff. Also I already shop a lot by emp. So my own rebell would be a dark dressed rocker.
A bump because this sparked some interesting discussion. Cait Sith here, by the way. Aoi's my only character here with a thief outfit. I've been intentionally vague with it because I've only settled on a color scheme: black and silver. However, this is a nod to his previous form, a Nicobar pigeon, due to its dark feathers when out of the light and its silver "mane." The outfit itself is probably bird-like, mainly because he views rebellion as being able to "fly away" from what holds him down. OOC me has already chosen a thief outfit without much regard to Hibiki's points, but its brown and gold color scheme as well as the segmented belt kind of resembles a treasure hunter or tomb explorer, or even an ancient priestess due to its flowy nature. I tend to value knowledge as a means of gaining my place in the world and changing things for the better. Kind of a quest for unknown knowledge, so to speak.
bumple lumple, cuz this is cool its boss btw, and IC for knight, his outfit doesnt get changed, because of the fact that because of the land he comes from (Lordran) doesnt value honor, ethics, and sensible judgement. so Fulmin, as a knight, keeps this code, and feels like a rebel for kepping these standards in the world he was in. out of character, id be a knight too, because i feel like its rebelling against norms by being a sensible person that isnt afraid to bring light to real problems.
For Yu I just gave him a outfit that looks like Izanagi's mostly because I'm sure Yu views his own Persona as the ultimate rebellion against the Gods he's fought against.
Curious how much more we can get on this. I'm glad at the very least it created some interesting discussion
Clearly the best thing to do after such an event is to remind people of discussion
For my OOC "thief" outfit, I want a full body, 1-in thick titanium body armor. It will probably be like this: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/42/14/d5/4214d5dc14662cf6eabc3bd175a78bde--body-armor-cyborg.jpg The reason why I see this as the rebel side of me is because I mostly rebel against people who think pushing others is a "good" thing and I want to be the one guy they can't push because of the heavy armor and so, I want to "push them" back.
A grey trenchcoat with combat boots, a white cravat, grey mask in a cross shape (covers the nose, eyes and a bit of the forehead) with holes for eyes. As for the weapons, a Katana and a Sniper rifle.
Neat thread Hibiki. Honestly, none of my characters are really rebelling against anything. I don't think I could consider bartz's fight against exdeath as a rebellion, more like a duty. I think he feels like he owes it to his father, to the people of Lix, to his friends, to Galuf. Same with many other of my alts. Tao's just too stupid. Meiling just does her job. Mokou just seeks vengeance. Etc... But, after thinking for a while and ruminating my characters' back-stories, I thought of Sakuya. While not much is known about her, we can assume a bunch of things from the people around her. First of all, Sakuya works as a maid for the scarlet devil Remilia, a vampire who holds power over fate itself. We know however that she doesn't actually control that power. There's been a lot of speculations about how Sakuya came to work for Remilia, and one of the most popular theories is that Sakuya used to be a vampire hunter who tried to kill remilia. But Remilia may have wanted Sakuya to serve her, and thus fate's threads aligned themselves to force Sakuya to stay with Remilia as a servant. If she had to rebel, it'd be against her own fate. The irony of being able to manipulate time and still be a thrall to destiny. If it were to happen, it would be against fate, with Remilia as a catalyst. As for the outfit... Well it'd have to be the opposite of her Maid attire. Something fit for a queen who would one day overthrow fate and take their own destiny for themselves.
